Penzance Reserves 1-0 Newquay Reserves

This game had draw written all over it until an great individual goal by Penzance’s Liam Bennett three minutes into injury time snatched the points for the Magpies. Newquay can feel hard done by as they had a few good chances and even rattled the crossbar.

Both teams are evenly matched this season. Before this match there was only one point in it, both having played the same number of games, similar goal difference, both started the season well, then faded but both back on the winning trail again. A draw would have been a fair result.

Newquay kick off facing the park end and soon get a free kick on the left. The ball comes in and a flicked header goes past the far post.

It’s nearly twenty minutes before there is more goalmouth action. Penzance work the ball down their left with Max Davies. He crosses to Ashley Thomas who is in the back of the box, a high shot nicely palmed away by Newquay keeper Billy Holland.

Back come Newquay breaking through the middle but the shot goes wide. This is followed by a free kick for Penzance just right of centre. Joe Day fires over the wall, the ball drops low and once again Holland is able to palm away for a corner. Again Penzance burst forward. A through ball from Bradley Wills to Steve Hancock who turns, fires in a shot which the keeper once again has to palm away.

A Newquay player gets booked for a tackle on Davies.

Newquay get a corner on their right, take it short, knock the ball in and a runner knocks the ball just wide of the near post.

Final chance of the half goes to the Magpies who work the ball right to left, Thomas runs down the line then into the box but his shot creeps along the goal line and away.

A long Newquay ball from the back goes through the Penzance back four into the box where Luke Wheldon has a one on one but shoots over the bar.

Penzance’s Liam Devine is booked for a tackle.

Newquay break, Penzance wait for off-side, Newquay player runs on, shoots and Craig Nicholls has to get down sharpish to clear.

A long Penzance ball from the keeper, one bounce, Bullock runs on, shoots and the keeper makes a double save to grab the ball.

Penzance substitute Liam Bennett for Hancock.

Penzance corner on the right, bounces out to back of the box. A Darren Ball pile driver whips just over the bar.

Newquay substitution, a change up front.

Newquay come down their right, cross to the edge of the box, Tom Graham fires over the keeper and rattles the crossbar.

Penzance then have one cleared off the line following a corner.

A late Newquay substitution to eat up precious seconds as 90mins are on the clock.

90+3mins on the clock. A Penzance throw-in on their right just over the half-way line. A throw to Liam Bennett, he runs down the line, then diagonal into the box, past two defenders, Bullock is clear in the middle with an open goal, but Liam runs on goal and from 8yds out puts one under the keeper cross goal. Cue for wild celebrations.

A minute later referee, Mike Carter blows for full time.
