Falmouth v Penzance

Recommended Posts

Falmouth Town Reserves 0-3 Penzance Reserves

Penzance continued their recent good form whilst playing at Bickland Park, now having lost only once in the last five seasons. We were surprised how many youngsters in the Falmouth team but like a lot of clubs they are probably rebuilding. Also with so many new Peninsula League teams locally, many Combination League clubs are having to use youngsters to fill their ranks.

Once again a game of two halves with the second period much the better for both teams until the sending off of the Falmouth keeper turned the game.

During the first half both teams hurried the game along snatching at chances when they came along but finding both keepers in good form. Falmouth had more chances in the half after weathering a ten minute spell of Penzance pressure just after the quarter hour.

The first chance falls to Penzance when they break right with Max Davies who gets down to the goal line, crosses along the line but two runners coming in both miss. Three corners in a row follow as the Magpies press but they come to nothing.

Falmouth now have a series of chance to go in front. They break right, cross to the edge of the box, their forward turns and shoots just wide.

Penzance’s keeper Craig Nicholls then produces a great save following a corner on the left, tipping a high shot clear. A few moments later he clears again but this time with his legs when Falmouth break right knocking the ball to the back post and the forward and defender bundle him over and deflect the ball goalwards but he gets that touch.

Penzance manage to get a high shot in but it sails over the top before they then get a free kick 25yds out dead centre. Joe Day takes it, over the wall for the keeper to make a great high diving flick out for a corner.

H-T

The second half is only four minutes old when Penzance make a substitution taking off Kim smith replacing him with Bradley Wills.

Penzance slow their game a little and start to get on top. Working from the middle of the park Thomas tries a long range shot which the keeper palms and Steve Hancock running in blasts just wide.

Just on the hour Penzance get their first. They work the ball around the middle of the park when Liam Devine 35yds out left of the box puts in a low curling volley that beats the keeper and goes in at the far post. 0-1 after 59mins.

A minute later Penzance sub Joe Day for Chris bullock.

A couple of moments later for some reason Brian Scoffin the Falmouth keeper decides he will dribble the ball out but as he gets to the edge of his box he is beaten to the ball. As the Penzance player goes around him towards the empty net he turns and pulls him back. Penalty and a red card. Thomas steps up and puts the ball low to the substitute keeper’s keepers left. 0-2 after 63mins.

Penzance get a corner on the right, take it short, lob the ball to the back post where Davies heads against the top of the post from 6yds.

A Penzance through ball sees Bullock doing all the hard work beating two, pulling the ball back but shooting just wide.

Both teams make a substitution, Penzance taking off Ross Badcock for Liam Bennett.

Falmouth break left into the box and Nicholls has to clear for a corner following a low shot. The corner comes in and a shot is cleared off the line.

Bullock once again nips through the middle but again fires wide.

Falmouth bring on their player- manager for the last few minutes.

Both teams exchange missed shots from inside the box, before Nicholls has to make a diving punch away following another low shot.

Then a couple of minutes before the end Bullock makes a good run down the right, squares for Wills on the edge of the box who makes no mistake with a low volley. 89mins 0-3.

Cornwall Combination League Cup

1st Round

20th October 2009

Penzance Reserves 4-2 St Ives

Penzance built up a four goal lead but once again as soon as a team ups its game against them they seem to go all jittery. A tale of two halves is how most people would put it with the Magpies dominating the first fourty five minutes them giving away the second to the Saints.

Penzance go into the lead as early as the 5th minute when the break right, cross to the edge of the box where Joe day controls the ball and shoots in low to the keeper’s right.

The Magpies have a couple of chances to score but shoot wide before Day gets his and the Magpies second after 18mins. A corner on the right is knocked over to the back post and he shoots low, cross goal into the net to make it 2-0.

Another Penzance break on the right sees the keeper palming away a cross goal shot.

St Ives then get a chance on goal when the break to the edge of the box, lob the ball up and a bad bounce forces Penzance keeper Craig Nicholls to punch clear.

Not to be out-done, St Ives’ keeper makes a good save following a break on the right and a rising Ashley Thomas shot from the edge of the box.

With 9mins left in the half Chris Bullock gets on the score sheet. Penzance work the ball across the park, right to left, break forward, the keeper comes to cut the angle down, the ball is knocked to the right for Bullock to tap into an empty net from 10yds. 3-0 after 36mins.

There is still time for two more goals before half-time. The first one to Penzance when they get a free kick on the edge of the box to the left. Day fires over and the ball goes high through the outstretched arms of the keeper. 4-0 after 42mins.

A minute later St Ives reply, also following a free kick. The ball is knocked through to Ross Duncan who runs into the box, beats two defenders and fires low from 10yds out. 4-1 after 43mins.

H-T

On 48mins Penzance sub Michael Edwards for Liam Bennett.

St Ives start the half much stronger than Penzance and you can see the back four starting to make mistakes.

A low St Ives shot is cleared off the line following a break on the left. Another shot is just wide of the upright following a break on the right. Another shot is grabbed from the air by Nicholls.

St Ives make a substitution.

Penzance manage a high shot from Thomas following a cross pitch ball, which the keeper tips over for a corner.

Penzance make a substitution bringing on Andre Otto, back after an injury lay-off, for Adam Fletcher.

With 20 mins of the half gone it was almost inevitable with all the pressure St Ives would score and they get their second following a corner on the left. A long ball to the back of the box sees Andrew Perkin rise to head a bullet cross goal into the net. 4-2 after 65mins.

A few moments later a shot hits the Penzance cross bar but bounces away to safety.

At last Penzance seem to find their back bone and apart from a long range shot that goes over the bar neither goal is threatened.

St Ives make a couple of substitutions to boost their attack but Penzance hold firm for the last few minutes.

F-T 90+2
