Illogan RBL 1-0 Penzance Reserves

Penzance must get more physical when playing teams like Illogan. They had the majority of the play, playing a great passing game but were muscled off the ball by a strong Illogan side. This was also a case of losing concentration for twenty seconds allowing Illogan to nip in and score.

For all their possession Penzance created very little in front of goal but the game still left a bitter taste in the mouth as it felt as if we were robbed of at least a point. Both teams were missing their regular keepers, Illogan’s suspended and Penzance’s playing cricket.

In the whole of the first half there were only three clear cut chances on goal between the teams. Penzance with their passing game had Illogan chasing and getting frustrated. Illogan were claiming everything, whinging and moaning at every decision by the ref. They kept breaking up the flow of the game with rough tackling and defending by kicking the ball out as soon as we got near the box.

Chris Bullock has a header that the keeper grabs after good work down the Penzance right.

Penzance get a bizarre free kick for a back pass to the keeper. An Illogan player jumps up to clear a lobbed ball. He misses, it bounces off his leg and the keeper picks it up. Ref says back pass. The kick is inside the box, on the left, 15yds out. Joe Day who scored from a similar spot the previous game takes it but the ball hits the wall and away to safety.

Just before the end of the half Illogan work right, lob in the ball and Andy Cowper tries a flick header but it goes wide of back post.

H-T

The second half is more even but again with few chances and once again the moaning and whinging starts.

Illogan break left, ball in and a Cowper header goes over the bar and away.

Another Penzance free kick, 25yds out left of centre sees a Jack Wing shot go over the wall and the keeper grabs safely.

From an Illogan corner they knock in three shots which are all cleared. Liam Devine gets booked for dissent but after needing treatment four times for a series of rough tackles you would be a bit aggrieved and say something to the ref.

Illogan fire in a long ball, one of their players turns fires in a high shot and Tom Hosking between the sticks for the Magpies makes a great diving two-handed save to push away.

With the game heading towards a draw Illogan get their goal. After marking him all game we let our guard slip for twenty seconds as Illogan break right, knock in a ball and Cowper has a simple header from the 6 yd line. A Penzance defender either side of him but no-one marking. Perhaps it was because a few seconds before Penzance had made a substitution and hadn’t sorted themselves out yet. 1-0 after 76mins

A few minutes later (83mins gone) the ref awards a penalty to Illogan for handball. Liam Bennett was adjudged to have handled, but to me it looked like it came off his hip. Hosking gets booked for arguing. Silly really because you don’t want to be booked just before facing a penalty or was it clever to put the Illogan player under more pressure while he waited to take it. Simon Ellis steps up and puts a grass cutter to the left of the post.

That’s it, only a few chances for both sides, a decent sized crowd, and a decent brew.

Corners – Illogan 4-6 Penzance (1-4 1st half)
