Penzance Reserves 9-0 Marazion

Even with a one-sided score line this was a wasted opportunity for the Magpies to hone their skills. For some reason they had a “Shoot-on-Sight” attitude the whole game. Good in some respects, but wasted when playing a weaker team (no disrespect to Marazion). They would have won the match easily but once a couple of goals to the good they should have used the rest of the game to improve their passing game, which they totally ignored last night and can be good at.

Penzance went in half-time 7-0 up and could have doubled that score if it wasn’t for the substitutions and players playing out of position during the second period. The midfield went walkabout for long periods of the second half as they all pushed forward and a couple of times had a scare at the back as Marazion, who battled gamely all match, nearly got on the score sheet.

At the start of the match the first couple of minutes sees Marazion camped in the Penzance half but the Magpies break and are awarded a free kick near the corner flag on the left. The ball is floated in, comes out to Ashley Thomas who knocks it into the centre where Liam Bennett has a simple header from 5yds to put Penzance 1-0 up after 4mins.

Strait from the kick-off they receive the ball and attack again. A cross goal volley goes wide before Thomas works the ball right, lays off, gets it back, two touches and scores with a low cross goal volley. 2-0 within 6mins,

Next time Penzance wait 3mins to score! Marazion’s defence looking square are beaten by a through ball to Steve Hancock on the left who beats the keeper with a low shot from 15yds.

Ryan Holland just misses with a back post knock from a cross from the right before Marazion get their first real chance of the game. Shaun Philips breaks through to go one-on-one with Craig Nicholls between the sticks in the Penzance goal. He shoots, the keeper saves, the rebound goes to Philips who fires into the side netting.

Then on 20mins, Thomas and Holland combine to put the Magpies 4 up when Thomas threads the ball through from the right into the box for Holland to fire low across goal into the net.

Then in the 27min Hancock gets his second and Penzance’s fifth when he again runs through the defence and beats the keeper with a low shot from outside the box.

Another Penzance through ball is laid off to new signing Joe Day who fires high only to see his shot cannon of the corner of bar and post.

On 37mins Hancock gets his hat-trick which unfortunately I didn’t see as I was still writing about Joe Day’s volley. Oops but it is 6-0.

The Marazion keeper makes a good one handed save from a Thomas free kick on the right before Penzance complete the scoring in injury time. A free kick in the centre is fired high into the fight-hand top corner by Day to make it 7-0.

H-T

Within a minute of the kick-off Penzance go further in front. Max Davis runs down the left, crosses over, Hancock fluffs a sitter and Thomas running fires low to make it 8-0.

Hancock then misses another sitter when one-on one with the keeper, knocking the ball wide.

Substitutions from both sides sees the game break up a bit with players moving around the pitch. The Marazion keeper makes a good two-handed save to push away a rising volley.

68mins are on the clock when Penzance score their final goal. Neil Hosking gets another through ball rounds the keeper and knocks the ball into the empty net to make it 9-0.

Then for the final 10mins Marazion have a couple of chance and come back at Penzance a bit. Penzance’s own fault as the mid-field goes walkabout with eight men up front eager to score and two at the back defending.

Marazion break and Nicholls has to get down quick to push away a shot. Penzance break right, a Thomas cross sees Lamin Fafana maker a valiant attempt to reach the ball with a fantastic flying dive. If he had connected it would have been a brilliant goal.

Marazion have another couple of chances at goal but Nicholls commands the box before Penzance’s final chance falls to Neil Hosking who knocks the ball wide when to shoot between the uprights would have been easier.

Penzance – Craig Nicholls, Charlie Penny, Ryan Holland, Lamin Fafana, Liam Bennetts, Ryan Andrew, Max Davis, Kim Smith, Steve Hancock, Joe Day, Adam Fletcher, Tom Hosking, Neil Hosking, Andre Otto, Liam Devine, Ashley Thomas
