Penzance v Sennen Match Report

Recommended Posts

First of the season so here goes.

22nd July 2009

Penzance Reserves 5-1 Sennen

Thanks to Norman Wood and his lads from Sennen 61 people had an enjoyable evening watch a good game of football at Penlee park.

To be truthful if Penzance had taken their chances they could have doubled their tally but a great cheer went up around the ground when Sennen scored, not only for a good goal but for the effort they put in making it an entertaining match.

Both teams used rolling substitutions during the game and Penzance were the first to show obviously putting out their strongest side for the start. First chance falls to Steve Hancock who picks up a through ball, beats his marker, chips over the advancing keeper only to see his lob dip just over the bar.

Then a few moments later the Sennen keeper makes a great diving save to push away a low Ashley Thomas volley. From the resulting corner, a long ball to the back of the 6yd box sees Liam Devine head just wide.

After 22mins Penzance break the deadlock. The ball is laid off left to new signing Max Davies who runs in and beats the keeper with a low cross goal shot from the edge of the box. 1-0 after 22mins.

From the kick-off Sennen break down the middle, fire in a rising shot that is grabbed by Craig Nicholls in the Penzance goal.

A few minutes before half time Penzance score the goal of the game. Ryan Holland gets the ball on the halfway line, jinks past half a dozen players and tackles and sends a screamer low into the left hand side of the net from 25yds. 2-0 after 39mins.

Thomas has a rising shot from 25ds just before half time but it goes just over.

H-T

5mins into the second half Penzance get their third. A high ball is lobbed into the box, the Sennen keeper jumps, drops it, falls to the ground with Holland who toe pokes it into the empty net. As the ball slowly rolls towards the goal the Sennen players stop thinking the referee will blow for an infringement (some would but there was no foul). 3-0 after 50mins.

A few moments later Penzance go further in front. Following a corner the ball comes back out to Thomas, who is running away from goal down the left touchline. Somehow he manages to turn and fire in a perfect cross all in one move, for Devine to leap and put a cross goal header into the net. 4-0 after 54mins.

Then Sennen get on the score sheet. A free kick on the left, 35yds out is knocked over the wall and Jamie Nicholls at the near post flicks a header cross goal. 4-1 after 65mins.

A couple of minutes later another Sennen free kick from the same spot results in a shot at the near post skimming to outside of the post.

With 15mins left Penzance finish their scoring. A cross to the left is knocked back in to Davies who fires in a low volley from 15yds out. 5-1 after 74mins.

Sennen have one more chance on goal when a cross goal shot goes wide but after that all the chance fall to Penzance, mainly Hancock.

A cross from Thomas sees Hancock scuff a shot at the back post when it would be easier to score than miss. He also tries with a cross goal shot but again is wide.

The last action of the game sees new team Captain Liam Devine, run down the right wing, knock in a perfect cross only to see three runners just miss getting a boot to it.
