cornishteddyboy
Reading the West Britain I saw these pieces of news. 13th Oct 1960 Due to financial difficulties, Newquay Football Club have released their 8 professional players from contract with immediate effect and will continue the rest of the season as an amateur club. 20th October 1960 It was agreed at an emergency committee meeting to re-instate the clubs professionals. Money would be found to pay them. June 1961 At the Club's AGM it was stated the club were £750 in debt and would be looking at ways of reducing that figure, one being, becoming an all amateur club like Penzance. Penzance During the season Penzance's supporters club membership had increased to 2,500 and it had given £1,250 to the football club. The club's teams have stayed amateur for the season, First, Reserves and A teams. Also the supporters club paid out £200 to pay for the building and groundworks to put in a new permanent tea-hut for the start of the 1960-61 season. They work was complete by the end of September 1960.
Guest The Judge aka RED OR DEAD
I see Newquay suffered badly that season compared to the previous seasons... 1955-56 SW 28 16 4 8 87 59 36 4/15 1956-57 SW 28 14 3 11 89 55 31 5/15 1957-58 SW 26 18 3 5 88 34 39 2/14 1958-59 SW 30 23 3 4 123 45 49 1/16 1959-60 SW 30 19 7 4 92 46 45 1/16 1960-61 SW 28 13 6 9 89 59 32 6/15 But after that improved for 61/62 1961-62 SW 26 16 3 7 86 47 35 4/14 Note that there were not too many clubs in the old SWL at that point. cornishteddyboy
If you read old newspapers you will find that there were very few senior teams that did not have professionals of one sort or other. That season Pz played Nanpean Rovers and Plymouth Engineering Depot in the FA Amateur Cup and reached the 1st Round Proper where they lost in a replay.
