  1. half the problem is the kids in youth football get told "its not about the winning its the taking part that counts" they don't make training drills and games competitive anymore and when they get to adult football they don't care one bit, a big ugly centre half gives them a hard time and they go off crying, When I was 16 if I made an error (usually a costly one being a keeper) I would take the criticism learn from it and move on I'd be off till training but i didn't turn up on a Saturday to lose that was my attitude anyway unlike the kids nowadays.
  2. Yes I'm sure we wont be the last this season, The club had a really good run starting in the kinglsey league wining 22 out of 22, duchy 5 and 1 runners up duchy 4 winners and a duchy cup final appearance and finishing 4th behind 3 very established clubs last season with better facilities and resources than us what pretty awesome, ultimately as a club we couldn't really progress further other than winning the premier division as we couldn't possibly apply for any promotion due to not meeting the criteria. we had very good young players with the desire to progress further so by folding it allows them to take that step on which is good in a way as they were loyal which is rare and didn't just go off at the first opportunity which they could have Launceston 2s have been scraping by for 2 seasons and have been sniffing around for our players. We achieved what the club started for taking young players giving them a chance and game time to progress through the football ladder the only problem was we didn't have a good enough feed to sustain a solid future I think the low number of youth players entering men's football is a real concern.
  3. Indeed a combination of factors, we have been operating on a small tightknit squad for past few seasons usually 11-15 regularly available and we played with bare 11 for a handful of games last season. A few have gone off to other clubs and a few have work shift commitments and family commitments that don't allow regular training and games and some are at uni. Launceston seems to have an abundance of clubs at the moment and i think all have struggled at some point to raise a side in past few seasons. Lifton, Altarnun and Launceston all struggled on to their credit and finished the season last year. We just couldn't see a way that we were going to be able to guarantee a side week in week out let alone compete in what looks to be the best duchy premier league in years and not to be a part of that is gutting. Instead of messing teams and the league about we took what we think is the best decision and withdraw. Indeed some have gone to play at Launceston 2s and all are good enough to be playing at that level. It should help them get back to the top half of the east cornwall premier and it will hopefully release some pressure on any of the other clubs looking to guarantee their future. The club may reform in the future if the number of players increases. or may join forces with another club to bring the Launceston college Phoenix ethos back so you may not have seen the last of us yet. On the plus side I will get the chance to indulge in some local football without the stress of running a club
  4. Anyone from st Stephen got the miss of the season on video needs sharing to the cornwall football community
  5. Pelynt 0 - 9 Lc Phoenix Phoenix are finally up and running after a convincing win on yet another appalling Saturday weather wise. Phoenix dominated the play throughout against a side who never looked like giving up despite there recent troubles so fair play to them. Kevin Hatch was on fire scoring 6 with Cameron Bailey adding a brace and Josh Barron adding to the tally Peter Sowden had a superb game with the whistle.
  6. St Minver 3-0 Lc Phoenix Phoenix suffered their second battling defeat of the season to last seasons runners up. Game was a very good example of what the higher end of the duchy league has to offer plenty of passing and played at a good tempo until the game changed as a few choice words in frustration by a phoenix player resulted in a red card, if every player saw red for swearing then the duchy league would struggle for fixtures each week. From then on it would be safe to say st minver dominated possession without causing to much trouble but before half time Minver won a debatable penalty a ball over the top was chased down and the official judged their to be a foul which was correct only problem was he was in no position to see it was clearly outside the box. Penalty despatched 1-0 Minver at half time. Second half was much the same Minver dominated but restricted to long pot shots and a free kick rattling the bar. Minver took the game beyond reach when another penalty was awarded, Player went down screaming with a recurring injury (all the best goes to him) and the official gave a penalty, again debatable as the player didn't seem to make contact with the player while attempting to block the cross although if the penalty wasn't given it ended up in the net anyway so no real complaints. Different taker same result 2-0. The final goal a weak header off a corner beat the keeper who will be disappointed not to keep it out. Onwards to next week now for Phoenix who have had a tough start facing 3rd and 2nd from last season in the opening weeks on small squads and not looking out of place hopefully a return of players may see a change in fortunes over the coming weeks
  7. Edgcumbe 1 - 0 Lc phoenix In light of last winters fixture backlog Lc phoenix got their campaign off to an earlier start than normal even though conditions over Torpoint where less than summery Hard fought game played in foul weather but good spirits and well reffereed. Both teams took a while to get going but once they did the game came alive both creating good chances phoenix will probably feel unlucky to go into half time 0-0 hitting the bar twice with the edgcumbe keeper pulling off two superb stops also. The second half Edgcumbe took control with the wind assisting restricting the phoenix attack but not creating clear cut chances themselves. The winner came with 10 to go a tiring bare 11 of phoenix made a crucial mistake from a throw in deep in the half losing the ball which was crossed in and the misqued clearance fell to the edgcumbe player to slam into the top corner
