Todays friendly was played in pretty atrocious conditions, could easily have been forgiven for thinking it was January not July. That being said mullions pitch looked decent and held up well. Mullion made the early running but it was penryn who took the lead when the industrious Charlie edney was bundled over in the box. He calmly slotted the resulting penalty away 1-0. A mullion corner with the wind claiming the assist sailed into the penryn net to level the scores. This seemed to stun penryn as they suddenly found themselves 3-1 down after 2 quick goals from Mullion. A substitute was made after an injury and Connor Horrell came on and almost instantly started to cause mullion problems with his pace. Some good play down the right saw the ball flashed across the box, no finishing touch but it was recycled and Edney was there to claim his second of the day with a well placed finish. Couple of long range efforts from mullion didn’t trouble Harry Salmon in the Penryn goal. Then froM nothing strong work from Edney saw him bend one into the stanction from 25 yards giving the home keeper no chance. Looked to be salvage job complete as half time drew closer, but some good play from Mullion saw them streak down the pitch and the striker a one on one with Salmon which he duly dispatched to make it 4-3 at the break. Again Mullion started the second half the strongest and quickly added 2 more goals to there tally 6-3. A Defender slid into the back of Edney which signalled the end of his afternoon, he had to make do with a first half Hat-Rick. This saw the reintroduction of Kyle Cook. In truth for 20 or so minutes penryn looked toothless without Edney and Mullion had the majority of possession but they seemed to completely take their foot of the gas thinking it was job done. Some good play from the defence saw the ball played down the right side, a pin point cross was powerfully met by Horrell who’s header was well saved by the Mullion custodian but fell back to Horrell who slammed it home,6-4. A few corners from Penryn saw a bit of late pressure put on the Mullion defence, they never looked troubled though until a wayward hand was spotted by the Ref who awarded Penryn their second penalty of the afternoon. Cook duly obliged slamming his penalty in of the cross bar, 6-5. The final few minutes saw the game just slowly come to a conclusion, neither side really having a shot of note. A game played in good spirits by two sides trying to play football. Kimmo is building something at Penryn and the season looks positive. Mullion are a decent hard working side who will be hard to beat at home and will have another solid season in the SWPL. Good luck to both sides for the upcoming season.
