Easter Preview Western/Combo Fixtures

Recommended Posts

5 games in 5 days could turn out to be the deciding factor for Truro City's two senior teams over a truly hectic, football-laden Easter weekend. It all starts on Friday (Friday, 3pm KO @ Treyew Road) when City host their nearest rivals Dawlish for a top of the table 6-pointer. The Whites will be keen to avenge the 5-2 Boxing Day defeat, and will certainly hope to finish with a more recognisable back-line than the injury ravaged side did that day. It certainly won't be easy as Chris Myers Dawlish side have emerged as Truro's nearest title challengers and haven't lost in the league since October 30th 2007. Moreover, the Seasiders have recently thumped 3rd placed Corsham 5-1 and beat Southern League outfit Tiverton 1-0 this week in the Devon St Luke's Bowl. With the sides separated by eleven points, a win for City will see them needing just 14 points from 9 league games. Conversely, a win for Dawlish and the gap will be down to just 8 points; it should be a true Easter treat.

Just 24 hours after Friday's potential epic encounter, City host Melksham (Saturday, 3pm KO @ Treyew Road) in another Toolstation Premier League game. City have yet to face Melksham in the league this season, but the Tigers ill-fated FA Vase campaign did include a 3-0 win over their guests back in December. Since then Melksham's form has improved, indeed they have only lost two of their last twelve games (Bideford, Dawlish) and will be looking forward to a trip to Treyew and a chance to cause an upset.

The fun doesn't even take a rest on Sunday for City's fans; Truro's Reserves will face local rivals Helston in the Combination League Cup Final (Sunday, 3pm KO @ Porthleven FC) . Despite City having beaten Helston this season 4-1 in the league, the Blues have stayed on City's coat-tails and may still emerge as their closest challengers for the title. As such it is perhaps fitting that these two sides should meet in the final and if the earlier league game is anything to go by it won't be one to miss.

Once recovered from Sunday, the next fix comes on Monday at Wadebridge where City will face Saltash United in the Cornwall Senior Cup Final (Monday, 4.30pm KO @ Wadebridge FC) . City will be looking to retain the famous cup for the third year running which would be the first time the club has achieved this feat. Standing in their way will be Carlsberg Peninsula League Premier side Saltash United, who are challenging for the leagues inaugural title. The two sides met in the Senior Cup last season and City emerged victorious after extra-time and there is no doubt the holders will need to be at their very best if they want to make a piece of history on Monday.

And for all those who still can't get enough football, City's reserve side will play host to Porthleven Reserves in an important league clash (Tuesday, 7.30pm KO @ Treyew Road) . Trevor Mewton's team will be looking to gain an important three points towards the Jolly's Combination title against a Porthleven side sitting 5th in the league and keen to avenge their 7-1 thumping by Truro in the recent Jolly's Cup Semi-Final.

Suffice to say this weekend is crucial for both sides, and the squads are boosted by the arrival this week of left-sided defender Martin Watts (Plymouth Argyle) and central/right midfielder Matty Bye (Exeter City). Watts has signed a contract with the club until 2010 while Bye has joined on non-contract terms until the end of the season.

Finally, with such a busy schedule the club would like to extend the supporters who continue to provide the teams with such excellent backing - it really is appreciated!

Happy Easter!

Allforeone 1889,

Come on now fella, with the squad city have now, even compared to last year they should win the cup,

but also as city get stronger, each year the Cornwall senior Cup will have no meaning because evryone will know that there is only one possible winner, Truro, through no fault of theirs,

they will simply be far to good for any other Cornish side, Unless some of them can also progress up the leagues, which I doubt, because who in Cornwall could finance a club in the same manner as Kevin Heaney,

Hammers :o:c: :c:

Guest Man on the Post

Hammers, I bet you thought the FA Cup would be won by either, Man Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool or Chelsea! Nothing surprises me when it comes to cup football and long may that continue. :clapper:
