Saltash win St.Agnes 7s

Historically, the Sharon Wood Wendron Tournament had staged a Ladies section but owing to lack of interest the section was withdrawn there this year so St Agnes AFC decide to host a Ladies Tournament on the same day. The interest was excellent with 19 Teams registering in advance to enter and 16 actually playing on the day - 160 Ladies playing football - what a great turn out!

New Ladies teams to Cornwall this season Truro Phoenix, Week St Mary, Kilkampton and Mevagissey all gave encouraging performances with Penzance, Falmouth , Hayle, Bude, Charlestown, Saltash, St Blazey, Roche, St Agnes and long distance travellers Bradford Town Ladies keenly contesting all of their fixtures.

The Tournament started with a Round-Robin Section with all team playing 4 matches then followed a Selection Round where the top 8 teams were placed into the Tournament Trophy and the lower 8 into the Supplementary Trophy. Then followed a Knock-Out Round leading up to Semi-Finals and Finals. The fixtures were planned so all teams played a minimum of 6 matches before being knocked out.

The semi-finals saw Penzance 1 and Charlestown beaten by Saltash and Falmouth in the Tournament Trophy and Hayle 2 and Penzance 1 defeated by St Agnes and Bradford Town in the Supplementary Trophy.

The final of the Tournament Trophy was a great display of Ladies football between two South West League Teams - newly promoted Falmouth (Western Division) and Saltash (Premier Division) battled it out with Saltash winning 1-0.

The final of the Supplementary Trophy saw an evenly matched fixtured between home team St Agnes and Wiltshire based Bradford Town ending in a 0-0 draw. Penalties followed with best of 5 still not deciding the winners - Bradford Town taking it at sudden death!

The Tournament was a great success regardless of the periodic squalls of rain throughout the day - the proceeds from the Tournament were split equally between St Agnes AFC and Cancer Research UK (St Agnes Branch) each receiving £300.

St Agnes AFC Chairman Mandy Kimmins commented,"What a success today has been - especially as it was all organized at quite late notice when we heard there wasn't going to be a Ladies Section at the Wendron Tournament this year. I would like to thank all the teams who entered and everyone who supported and helped in every way especially the officials, food providers and administrators on the day. I hope we might plan a second Tournament next year as everyone seems keen to come back - especially Bradford Town who will need to defend their Supplementary title which the Aggie Ladies will be keen to contest and bring back home!"

Nicked it from Wilf Frith's Ladies news letter, :P Wasn't a bad turn out considering there was no interest :smiley20: Well done to all teams who took part and good luck for the season :clapper:
