AFC HAYES MATCH REPORT

Recommended Posts

This Is Cornwall Report:-

Truro City moved to within one win of clinching the BGB Southern League Division One South and West title with a comfortable victory over their Middlesex visitors on Saturday.

And Sean McCarthy's side will expect to wrap up the championship when they visit struggling Taunton Town on Easter Monday.

Tom Smith gave City an early lead following a corner, but then conceded a penalty which Dean Papali converted to level the scores.

But two goals at the start of the second half from Scott Walker and Stewart Yetton sealed victory for City who have now won 16 out of 17 games this year.

Closest rivals Windsor & Eton won 1-0 at Paulton Rovers to prolong the title race, but with three games left to play it is surely only a matter of time before City clinch a fourth successive promotion.

In a game watched by a crowd of 628 at Treyew Road, City created good early chances with Andy Watkins shooting wide and Andy Taylor having his goalbound header hacked away for a corner.

And it was from the corner that City went ahead when the visitors' defence allowed Walker's kick to reach the far post, where Smith's fine volley flew past a helpless James Harry in the Hayes' goal.

But three minutes later Smith turned from hero to villain when he was rather harshly adjudged to have fouled Dean Papali in the area and Hayes' leading scorer levelled from the spot-kick with Smith also getting as caution.

City though, soon regained their composure and Taylor was unlucky when his shot hit the post with Yetton unable to force the loose ball home.

Harry then dropped a Walker free-kick with Jake Ash only denied by some desperate last ditch defending.

But the second half was only four minutes old when City regained the lead with Walker forcing the ball home from close range after Taylor's cross had come back off the bar.

And three minutes later Yetton's 32nd goal of the season as he stooped to head home at the far post after Ash had flicked on Walker's corner effectively sealed the points

Manager McCarthy then took the chance to rest his strike pairing of Yetton and Watkins and switched to a five man midfield to see the game out.

City: Rice; Ash, Power, Smith, Baker; Taylor (Watts 78), Martin (capt), Clay, Walker; Yetton (Broad 65) Watkins (Eddy 65). Subs (not used): Stevenson, Hockley.

Goals: Smith (12), Walker (49), Yetton (52).

A few weeks back there was a thread about Yetton and how he had lost his nack of scoring etc.

Just read in the match report that the bloke has scored 32 league goals this year!

Anyone who claimed he was past it, needs to drop back to SWPL, not good enough, blah blah blah, should check the facts!

If someone can be as bad as they claimed and still notch 32 times, lookout if he does sort the shoulder and start firing propoerly!

Correct me if i'm wrong but he had a baron few weeks too didnt he?

Crikey, there are strikers everywhere that wish they could be as bad as him!

Looking back, what a laugh that thread was!
