Plymouth Argyle Veterans 4

As part of their 10 year anniversary St Stephens Borough played a veterans football match against Plymouth Argyle veterans in Kimberley Stadium, Saltash, on the Sunday of May Fair weekend - 4th May 2008 - kicking off at 2.30pm.

In front of a crowd in the region of 300 people if not more Borough went down 4-2 to the team of ex professionals but gave as good as they got for the majority of the match.

Argyle drew first blood when Mark Damerell put them ahead only for Shane Blanks to quickly draw Borough level.

There were chances for both teams with Borough goalkeeper Gary 'The Cat' Homer saving brilliantly from Tommy Tyan whilst Chris Pierce-Jones and Lee Stapleton both went close for Borough before the half ended one goal apiece.

Argyle started to dominate for a spell at the start of the second half but the next goal was a brilliant header from Borough's Alistair Sampson. Unfortunately he headed into his own net to give Argyle the lead.

Further goals followed from Gary Penhaligon and Micky Evans for Argyle before Steve Brown gave the Borough fans something to cheer as he rounded the keeper before slotting home their second to make the final score 4-2 to the visitors.

This was an excellent game of football and afternoons entertainment and was thoroughly enjoyed by the large crowd which included the Mayor of Saltash Bob Austin and his wife as well as Cornwall County FA President Brian Conyon MBE.

St Stephens Borough are extremely grateful to everyone connected with Plymouth Argyle veterans, to the match referee Shaun Edge and his assistants Colin Penhorwood and Keith Olver and to Saltash United AFC for allowing the use of Kimberley Stadium and for providing the post match hospitality.
