Portsmouth SFA U13’s vs West Cornwall SFA U13’s

Date: 18th December 2012

Score / Result: Portsmouth SFA U13’s 1 – 7 West Cornwall SFA U13’s

Match Report

West Cornwall got of to another great start going 2-0 up in the first five minutes with goals from Finn Cross (Penryn College) and Jacob Trudgeon (Mounts Bay Academy). Both goals were very similar and were classic counter attacking goals switching from defense to attack very quickly ending the moves with some clinical finishing.

Portsmouth had some very talented technical players and moved the ball quickly to feet around the pitch on a boggy surface. West Cornwall however worked extremely hard and made it difficult for the opposition with endless chasing and desire to regain possession of the ball. As the first half increased West Cornwall got stronger and began to gain control of the game scoring two further goals converted by Theo Simpson (Mounts Bay Academy) and Will Trew (Truro) taking West Cornwall into half time with a 4-0 lead.

After the break, West Cornwall again came flying out of the blocks and a defense splitting pass allowed Will Trew (Truro) to score his second of the game with a firm strike of the ball across the goal keeper from a tight angle into the side netting of the goal. Portsmouth equalized with a first time finish from a deep right wing cross to end a good passing move making the score 5-1.

On came Luke Jephcott (Penryn College) who immediately caused problems with his pace and got himself a goal with a neat one two move to then calmly slot it past the keeper in a 1v1 situation. The final goal of the game was converted by Oliver Walker (Richard Lander) who scored yet another goal from 30yards similar to the last game but this goal bounced over the goal keepers head instead of going in the top corner.

We now look forward to the next round (quarter final, last 8) and our opponents will be Waltham Forest or Ealing High U13's SFA. This game shall be played at Truro City AFC (Date TBC) and your support will be most welcome.

I must add that this is the first time the West Cornwall SFA in the U13's age group has made it to the last 8 of the National District Competition and their achievements and performance to date have been outstanding. All players did themselves, their schools and their District proud as their manner, behavior and professionalism was exemplary on and off the pitch.

The selected squad of 16 players for the game was as follows:-

Another Fantastic win for the U13's, the player pathway in the West of Cornwall is really starting to bear fruit. In the last few seasons the West Cornwall U 15's have reached the final of the Worrell Shield, and with 3 very successful Isle of Wight trips for the recent Under 14's the role of the Long Term Development Centres is truly showing its validity.

For those that do not know, there are 3 County FA run LTPD centres in the West of Cornwall, Cornwall College, Penryn College and Mounts Bay Academy, all run by UEFA qualified staff, there is also a Plymouth Argyle LTPD at Truro which also feeds into the same system. These have been running for up to 6 years for boys and girls aged 7 - 12, the centres then combine to create the West Cornwall U13's.

If anyone is interested in getting their child/ a player at their club involved please contact football@cornwall.ac.uk and trial details can be distributed,

A massive well done to Kevin and his team, all other county teams will be at the next game to support our U13 team mates.
