Jimbo
Newquay being without a game for 18 days played the Vets side in an eagerly contested friendly. Sean Rooney nearly put the Vets ahead in the second minute when his left foot volley was turned over by goalkeeper Matt Spencer. Symon Winnan resuming goalkeeping duties was outstanding in the first period denying the Newquay forwards on several occassions the highlight being a finger tip save from a Luke Rigby right foot drive. Christian Lett was adjudged to have been fouled after half an hour and Scott Palmer scored from the spot although Winno came mightily close to saving it. Early in the second half a "Beckhamesque" curling cross from Jake Hartigan was headed in at the far post by the impressive Orrin Crowle. Newquay's third was scored by Christian Lett after good build up play and Lett scored his second from close range poking the ball past the exposed Winnan. This was an excellent work out for both teams Newquay ahead of their semi final against Dobwalls next Wednesday and the Vets away on Sunday at Hayle in their quest to win the Western section of the Veterans League. Thanks to everyone who bought a superb programme that was produced for the game and Winno capped off a good night by winning a bottle of Italian red wine in the raffle.
