Newquay 2 Penryn 0

Recommended Posts

This was a very even encounter and perhaps fortune favoured the Peppermints on this occassion. The minute's silence in memory of Brian Biggin was impecably observed by everyone in the ground. Penryn forced Newquay back in the early stages but without creating a real clear cut chance. Scott Palmer had a good opportunity but chose to chip the ball instead of one of his trade mark blasters and this resulted in a simple save for Steve Raven in goal. Paul Robertson then dragged his shot wide of the upright. Luke Payne making his league debut in the Newquay goal made a brilliant left handed save to deny O Shaughnessy from a right foot free kick. Penryn had a number of good situations but a combination of good defending and desperate defending meant thay didn't capitalise at this point of the game. Newquay took the lead when Robertson rounded Raven and when all expected him to shoot he showed real composure and took his time before delivering an expert cross to Middleton to head in at the far post. Newquay increased their lead just before half time when Robertson capitalised on a half chance to fire past Raven. The second half was again evenly contested. Penryn were awarded a penalty early on. This was a massive part of the game as Hal Davies fired the spot kick against the bar. Shortly after there was a strong shout from the Penryn side for another penalty when the attacker may have been pushed. At the other end Palmer used his pace to breach the Penryn back line but he shot wide when well placed. Paul Hampshire blazed over from an accute angle and Robertson looked to have been brought down but the referee waved play on. Both teams tired towards the end of the game and Newquay will certinly be glad of the three points against opponents who will be there or thereabouts come May.
