Mawnan Smith 4 Culdrose 3 ( played at Helston FC )

Mawnans win last night against a spirited Culdrose side gave them their first double since 1972 .

Culdrose started strongly and went one up direct from corner ( sorry dont know Culdrose goal scorers names ) , Mawnan then lost player manager Gregg renfree after 15 mins with a pulled hamstring which meant a reshuffle and a change in formation back to a familiar 4-4-2.

DJ tapped home the equaliser for his 5th of the season only for Culdrose to go 2 - 1 up on the half hour ( ish ) when a cross from the right was converted from 12 yards . Mawnan then equalised when Chris pellow latched on to a ball over the top from Ross Stevens to finish well . 2-2 half time .

A half time 'talking to ' by the management got Mawnan fired up and went on to dominate the 2nd half scoring early on when after some neat approach play Pellow once again finished , stabbing the ball under the keeper when put through by Paul Terry .

On the hour sub Alex Weddell headed a deep cross back across the keeper to make it 4-2. Numerous chances fell to Mawnan but just couldnt finish however Culdrose never gave up and grabbed a consolation goal at the death from a goal mouth scramble to make the final score 4-3.

Well played Culdrose , really have no idea why you are languishing near the bottom of division 2 , you are far better than your league position and wish you all the best .

Congratulations to all the Mawnan boys for a great season .

Damo.

A very entertaining final which was won by the better side over 90 minutes, Felt we were robbed of a two goal lead by a strange refereeing decision which may have put a little more pressure on the worthy champions.

Like you say Damo, strange old season for us, we went nearly 2 months without a league game due to 4 cup matches either side of christmas Leave and have never really recovered. strange thing is if we win our last two we finish 8th! that is how close it is.

Mawnan proved that they are up there as one of the premier clubs if not the premier club in Junior Football, a decent bunch of lads with respected people behind the scenes. They would put a few Combo clubs to shame.

Congratulations once again and lets hope our lads take the positive performance into Saturday for once!!!!
