penryn 2-3 millbrook

What a result that is!

FT: Penryn Athletic 2-3 Millbrook

PASSION, Pride and Performance. This was the message Millbrook Manager Dane Bunney used to describe the club's excellent victory at Kernick against 5th place Penryn Athletic in a game which saw injuries, a penalty and some awful misses in amongst the great football being played.

It was Penryn who started the brightest on a superb, dry surface, hitting Millbrook on four counter attacks in the first 3 minutes and forcing them to defend 2 corners in a row.

It wasn't long before Penryn scored the first of the afternoon. After a corner from Sean Johnston, the ball was cleared back to Johnston and his cross from the left hand side, evaded the Millbrook defence, towards the back post where Penryn defender Chris Davey neatly headed the ball in the back of Pen-Collins net. (6)

Millbrook then got into the game, creating several clear-cut chances themselves, but Steve Raven in the Penryn goal denied all attempts of an equaliser.

Well those words were short lived as 10 minutes later, a cross from the left was not cleared properly by the Penryn defence and Ben Ferguson had the easiest of opportunities, slotting the ball home from 10 yards out.

With possession not being controlled by either side the game became a bit uneasy for spectators. But, it was Penryn who regained the lead (27), when, another cross from Johnston was headed home by Chris Davey; two for him and two assists for Johnston.

Back came Millbrook. Their heads never dropped, and battled through the hot conditions, and scored an equaliser from open play(37). A through ball by Ben Ferguson was collected by Chris Belston, who beat the offside trap, and slotted the ball under the legs of Raven. Chris Curran regained possession from kick-off and made a superb run from the half way line and attempted a lob from 20 yards out, catching the back-tracking Raven, but the ball only just going over.

A rather serious injury to Millbrook goalkeeper Dan Pen-Collins forced Dane Bunney into a change before half time. Pen-Collins, suffering a dislocated shoulder, was replaced by Ryan Swiggs, and outfield player, after no substitute goalie available. Despite the setback, Millbrook were level at half-time.

After the break, Millbrook came out more confident and with a fast tempo to their game, and great all round play. Dominic Burn and Ryan Thomason's defensive partnership the key, when stopping the Penryn attack.

Millbrook took an early lead (48), from the penalty spot after Chris Curran was brought down in the penalty area by Penryn's Peter Davey, who earned himself the award of first booking of the match. Up stepped Chris Belston who sent the 'keeper the wrong way with a calm and collected penalty. Millbrook worked very hard to come from behind twice to take the lead for the first time in the game.

On 60 minutes, Craig Errington got himself booked for a challenge on Dale Bands. Errington was on course to be booked having been warned on several occasions.

On 69 minutes both clubs freshened things up with a substitute each; Penryn brought on Ollie Moody for Matt McLlroy and Millbrook replaced Jamie Rose with Andy Hobbs.

Hobbs controlled the midfielder, covering well and showing his ability in defence and attack.

Penryn had two chances on 74 minutes; A header from Peter Maclean not powerful enough to beat Swiggs. Their second effort was from Swiggs' clearance. Peter Davey collecting the ball deep inside his half and his punt down the right hand side found Moodey, whose clever dribbling and skill on the ball, created a chance for Peter MacLean who could only hold is head in his hands, after sliding across goal and missing the connection by inches.

On 80 minutes another Millbrook substitution; Mark Oram replacing Craig Errington.

AND THEN..... something that even Soccer AMs' Taxi feature would of been proud of. That famous saying... "even my gran could have scored it" moment for Chris Belston; A defensive howler from Raven; Instead of kicking the ball away, he decided to attempt to throw the ball out. The ball cannoned off Chris Curran who squared it to Chris Belston who was on course to score his hat-trick. With no keeper in sight, he controlled the ball before unleashing a piledriver wide and out of the stadium.

The last 5 minutes tested Millbrook's mental attitude as they conceded a very late corner, but Penryn were unable to score from the final attack of the game and Millbrook returned home with a vital victory.
