Foxhole 1 Penzance 1

Saturday 21st March 2009

Ten man Foxhole came within 5 minutes of earning their second fantastic victory of the week after another tremendous display only to be cruelly denied by a fluke equaliser by Reski, whose cross from the right dipped just under the bar. This was incredibly cruel on the spirited Foxes, who had defended admirably, particularly once Bromley had harshly been shown a straight red on 58 minutes for a collision with Harrington which barely warranted a free-kick, only one of several highly contentious decisions by the referee.Backed by a strong breeze, Foxhole were guilty of routinely overhitting their passes in the first half, makeshift striker Prince unable to link effectively with the willing Friendship. Although the home team enjoyed the majority of possession, the Penzance defence was seldom exposed, and the best chances fell to the visitors' Drummond, who twice failed to convert centres from right-back Hollands, and who was then denied a certain goal by a brilliant challenge by Hobbs. Westgarth, largely anonymous throughout the match, did come close when his volley skimmed the top of the bar.

With Prince withdrawn to bolster the midfield, Friendship was forced to plough a lone furrow upfront after the break. Nevertheless he soon found himself through on goal only for his square ball to Griffin to be cut out by Bushby. Moments later, Ryan Holland had to be alert to dive at Drummond's feet after Hobbs had slipped before, on 55 minutes, Griffin seized on Friendship's pass to lob the onrushing Taylor from 15 yards. Almost immediately, the hardworking Bromley was dismissed by the fussy referee, who also cautioned Rowe and Griffin for dissent and Prince for delaying a free kick, when a stern word may have sufficed in each case. Foxhole were really up against it now but should have doubled their lead when Prince side-footed wide at the far post from Butler's low cross. The final quarter of the match was virtually attack versus defence but, while Adam Holland had to clear Vercesi's header off the line, and Westgarth scuffed a shot wide, the Foxes were dealing relatively comfortably with the incessant pressure until Reski's huge stroke of good fortune. Squires may have snatched victory in stoppage time before his fellow substitiute Holland was cautioned for hauling down Butler, Warne firing over the resulting dead ball.
