Hayle Reserves 2-6 Penzance Reserves

Penzance got back to winning ways against a spirited Hayle side who never gave up trying. Penzance dominated most of the match building up a 5-0 half-time lead, but letting it slip a bit in the second period.

From the off Penzance, playing down the slight slope, put the Hayle goal under pressure. An Ashley Thomas cross from the right sees Gary Matthews just miss with a shot at the back post, and he again misses a few moments later from a Ryan Holland corner volleying wide of the back post.

Penzance are making Hayle chase the ball with some neat passing in midfield whilst Hayle try the long ball game which they find is cut out by the Penzance back four.

Penzance get a corner on the right. Thomas takes it to the near post where new signing Glen Squires cleverly flicks the ball over his shoulder high onto the bar and it bounces into the net. 14mins gone, 0-1.

Four minutes later Penzance double their lead from another corner, this time from the left. It comes over long to the back post where Bradley Wills heads it back across for Matthews to bundle it in from 6yds. 0-2 after 18mins.

For some reason Penzance start to play the long ball game as well, much to their supporters’ frustration and the game becomes bogged down with little or no chances for either team.

As the half winds down suddenly Penzance up their pace and score 3 goals in 6mins.

A log ball from the back sees Wade Brown run onto it, the keeper advances and Brown jinks and fires high into the net from 15yds. 0-3 after 42mins.

Hayle’s Andy Withers is booked for a stamp on the back of Holland’s leg.

2mins later Penzance are awarded a penalty when Matthews is bundled over on the edge of the box. Thomas steps up and puts it low to the keeper’s left. 0-4 after 44mins.

Then Penzance score their forth goal from a set piece. A corner on the right from Holland is sent over long, it's headed back in to the box and Tom Hosking nods it in from 3yds out to make it 0-5 after 45+1mins. A Hayle player is booked for dissent.

H-T

From the kick-off, Hayle break wide right into the box but shoot into the side netting. Then from the resulting goal kick they get the ball back, pass it through the defence, where Nick Cook runs onto it and puts a low shot under the advancing keeper from 15yds out. 1-5 after 46mins.

Two minutes later Penzance reply. They work the ball down their right, pass across the goal where it eludes three Hayle defenders, and Glen Squires at the back of the box turns and fires across goal into the net. 1-6 after 48mins.

Then Hayle are lucky not concede another when their keeper bends down to collect a cross goal shot from Thomas but it goes through his hands and legs and out for a corner.

Hayle break but shoot over from 35yds.

Penzance have a couple of chances. Squires heads just over from a Thomas cross and Brown has a golden opportunity when put through one on one but the keeper makes a great save with his legs. Penzance make a couple of substitutions.

Then Hayle get a free kick just left of centre 30yds out. The ball is thumped over the wall and the Craig Nicholls tips it out for a corner. The corner is fired in low to the back post and Adam Northolt volleys against the upright and Penzance scramble it away.

Penzance make another substitution followed by a couple from Hayle.

Then Hayle are awarded a penalty that has everyone, Hayle supporters as well, gasping in disbelief. Penzance’s Ryan Andrew is brought down but for some reason the ref blows for the spot kick. Andy Withers steps up and sends the keeper the wrong way. 2-6 after 77mins.

Then a few minutes later they are awarded another for pushing but this time Withers puts the ball just wide to the right.

The last action of the game sees Holland trying a cheeky 30yd lob after the keeper has to come out to close the angle down but the ball lands on the roof of the net just behind the crossbar.
