Don't start Judge I've only just got home with my fish & chips This was always going to be a good game today and none of the players disapointed the crowd. Perranwell were 2-0 up early on and Perranporth replied courtesy of Justin Andrew's head. Two shoulder injuries (one resulting in Mike Cain traipsing off to Treliske for an x-ray) in the same game was quite a rarity and meant over 7 minutes of injury time in the first half. The woodwork denied Perranporth several goals and Dean Harris's awesome clearance off the line denied Perranwell a third. All in all the better team won on the day (in my opinion). John Mitchell was his usual reliable self in goal for Perranwell although I did wonder if the 64 on his shirt was for his age or his weight A busy match for me as I had to venture out of the dugout on several occasions but as I've been off my head on Lemsip for most of the day I didn't notice the cold I was a bit sad that Jake Harvey didn't get on today as I'd like to see the legend in action but I'm sure he'll still sink a few tonight with his guys to celebrate :drink: Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

kempy Posted February 14, 2009 Report Share Posted February 14, 2009 Well it was a good win for the village boys today at Perranporth and keeps it interesting at the top! just about deserved it i would say as the reverse fixture earlier in the season i thought we should have got something out of that game! But Dave Fisher's boys will go to Saltash next week in the Senior cup on a high! And good luck to Perranporth as it would be great if both teams do meet again! Now before anybody shouts,Newquay 2nds did not go into the Holmans clubhouse last season and the manager at the time was told by the Newquay committee that they were expected to accept their hosts hospitality. kempy Posted February 15, 2009 Report Share Posted February 15, 2009 In response to the previous post i did watch the game also and agree the Brewers did play well ( as they have all season) but Scott Kinge did stand out in midfield ( even after his shoulder popped out and in again!) aswell as most of the boys! even the evergreen Bambi! But Mike Cain did go off with a shoulder injury too and was replaced after about 20 minutes!! Well it is a taem game! It's almost a shame that Perranwell had to drop points at Mount Wise! Illogan are also doing a great job, getting on with things in a professional manner and they keep picking up three points... I get the feeling that this title isn't quite done and dusted as of yet. Perhaps the comment 'if we don't beat Perranwell by five clear goals' only served to do one thing? With James Merrikin called up to the first team, Michael Rabone deputised in goal and David Rabone returned to replace Orrin Crowle, who was absent on Cornwall Youth duty. As the influential Shaun Lawrence was missing with injury, youngster Lewis Burgin made his debut in midfield and Assistant Manager Matt Darwent stepped in for the absent Matt Davis with Jack Bevan also returning on the Newquay wing. Newquay Manager Andy Bicknell was also absent, so Wayne Tipton took accountability for the team. Groundsman Steve Connolly did an outstanding job to prepare an excellent surface given the recent weather. Newquay could not have hoped for a better start, a long kick by Rabone found former Wendron player Mitchell Stevens on the left, his incisive ball found David Rabone who worked his way free from the last man and curled the ball around the stranded goalkeeper from 25 yards within the first minute. The early goal gave Newquay momentum, however, they were unable to convert a number of opportunities early on, with the Wendron goalkeeper making two outstanding saves to deny Rabone and Stevens. Wendron gradually forced their way back into the game and despite a couple of efforts they were unable to trouble Rabone in the Newquay goal. Wendron did have the ball in the back of the Newquay net, although the referee gave a foul for an infringement on the goalkeeper. With the game at 1-0 it was always going to be tight, yet Newquay managed to double their advantage with the last kick of the second half. An angled ball from Matt Darwent was intercepted by Matt Willmott, who rounded the goalkeeper and slotted home for an important goal. Newquay were keen to press home their advantage and a poor backpass was intercepted by David Rabone who was clipped just inside the box by the onrushing goalkeeper. Jamie Tipton stepped forward and stroked the penalty home and effectively removed any Wendron hopes of a comeback. The three-goal cushion allowed Newquay to play with confidence and it wasn't long before Newquay added a fourth. A raking pass was met by David Rabone who yet again beat the 'keeper to the ball, edging through on goal and sliding the ball in via the inside of the post for his second. Any hopes of a Wendron consolation were dashed when an excellent move resulted in a low cross to the back post that the young striker inexplicably sidefooted over from two yards. Wendron were soon punished for their mistake when a move from the Newquay back for resulted in Andy Harris finding James Pilling out on the wing, Pilling beat the full-back and squared an inch-perfect ball to Matt Willmott, who turned and back-heeled the ball home for Newquay's fifth and his second. Not to be outdone, David Rabone collected the ball twenty-five yards from goal, turned the centre-back and lofted a chip into the far corner of the net for an excellent hat-trick, meaning 12 goals in 12 games for the returning striker. Wendron played some excellent football at times and were unable to make any clear cut chances from their free-kicks in the Newquay half count. The hard work and determination of the Newquay midfield and front-line was supported by some resolute defending from the back three of Weller, Darwent and Morris. Newquay thoroughly deserved their victory and may regret not being a little more ruthless in front of goal. Newquay host Falmouth Town on Saturday. Assistant Manager Matt Darwent's Man of the Match - David Rabone. Attendance - 40 It's not often that I discuss referees, I am not sure of his name, however he had an outstanding game today and on the whole let the game flow. There was only one booking for the Newquay player (who thoroughly deserved his yellow card) and I think he made a sensible decision when the goalkeeper made a foul for the penalty as last man. The Home side started brightly and Ian Goslings inswinging free kick was well held by John Mitchell. After 7 minutes a great tackle by Steve Allen managed to release TJ Wilson who beat Eliott Brown for pace and pulled the ball back to Captain Mike Brewer on the edge of the box and he shot through a crowd of players past the unsighted Andy Butcher. Five minutes later it was 2-0 when Referee Alan Hoon adjudged, rather harshly, that Mike Cainn had played a back pass off his shin to Butcher. The free kick was given 7 yards out and after being touched by Steve Brewer, Mike rifled his shot into the roof of the net. Jonathan Blundell nearly made it 3 but he shot tamely at Butcher. This spured the home team into action and Justin Andrew headed over and Kane Trevaskis had a shot saved before the home side lost their Captain Mike Cain when after an excellent sliding tackle on Blundell the big striker landed on him and popped his shoulder. Bryan hawke then slid in Trevaskis and he finished pass Mitchell but was contrevorsially given offside. 5 minutes before half time another Gosling free kick was met by the unmarked Andrew to make it 1-2. there was still time before the half ended for Hawke to run 40 yards before unleashing a piledriver that Mitchell brilliantly pushed round the post. Half Time: 1 - 2 The 2nd half was only 5 minutes old when Justin Miles excellent cross found Andrew again unmarked but his cushioned Volley just went over. Andrew then had a header saved by Mitchell and both Dark and Moustrides shot wide. At the other end a Scott Kinge corner was met at the far post by Allen and his header looped over Butcher but was cleared off the line by Miles. It was now becoming like the Alamo in the Well defence as Porth pushed forward but more often than not the ball was overhit and ran through to Mitchell. With 15 minutes left Rowson & Aquarti came on to make a front 4 and they had a succesion of 4 corners and from the last one Mitchell rose well and caught before releasing Matt Rose who sent Blundell racing through from the halfway line, he rounded Butcher and looked as if he had slipped the ball home but the outstanding Dean Harris had got back and slid and cleared the ball of the line. Perranporth surged forward again and with 2 minutes left on the clock Moustrides chipped the ball to the far post where the on rushing Dark caught it on the volley from 8 yards only to be denied by Mitchell's fingertips and the post.
