Hayle 4 Foxhole 2

Saturday 8th November 2008

Weakened Foxhole bowed meekly out of the Charity Cup, although two late goals at least provided some respectability. Wayne Quinn thumped an early dead ball against a post and, with the slope and the wind in their favour, Hayle always looked the more threatening in the opening period. They went ahead on 14 when Liam Quinn met a long free kick from brother Wayne to head past nervy second teamer Anton Lake. Warne missed a rare Foxhole opening on 38, and within three minutes Hayle had doubled their lead when Palmer fired into the corner, before Shiels rounded the stranded Lake to make it 3-0 on 43. Shiels was cautioned early on for dissent, and was joined in the book by Palmer for a foul on Prince while Rickard, too, saw yellow although his challenge on Johns was laughably innocuous.

Rowe hobbled off just after the restart and his absence was soon felt when the unmarked House finished off good work by Palmer to effectively end the contest on 57. Foxhole did finally wake up and with greater belief may have triggered a revival against such ordinary opponents. Rickard might have done better with a couple of opportunities and Friendship saw a header gathered by Cheal before, on 75, Nicholls released Rickard to offer some hope. Nicholls then flicked Butler's free-kick narrowly wide before, with six minutes left, Hobbs added a second, following up once the keeper had parried Rickard's drive. Bromley and Nicholls each went close as conditions deteriorated to leave the frustrated visiting support wondering why the Foxes had afforded Hayle so much respect.
