Perranwell 5-0 Penzance Reserves

Today Penzance were given a lesson in finishing by a strong Perranwell side whilst the Magpies mid-field seemed to go walk-a-bout. They also missed Darren Holsey and Mark Grenfell at the back.

As early as 30 seconds the warning signs were there as Perranwell broke left from the kick-off, crossed and only a fine two footed diving save by the Penzance keeper at the back post kept a volley out. Another volley comes in on their next attack but the shot is scuffed and is easily gathered. Then from a Perranwell corner on the right a ball is dropped into the centre of the box where a head meets it to fire it goalward but the keeper finger-tips it over for another corner.

Penzance manage a break and come down the left but a wayward cross goes behind the forwards. Perranwell break down their right, lob over a cross pitch ball and TJ Wilson fires a rising curler into the net from 30yds out. 1-0, 19mins.

A few minutes later they have a chance to double the lead when a direct free kick on the edge of the box curls just wide of the upright. But the inevitable happens and they go further in front. Perranwell break down the right put in a cross to the edge of the box and a weak volley from Mike Brewer is deflected by a Penzance defender over a diving Craig Nicholls to make it 2-0 in the 29th minute.

Seven minutes later another one is scored when Perranwell are awarded a penalty when Jake Harvey is adjudged to have been fouled. Mike Brewer steps up and fires low to get his second and the teams third. 3-0, 36mins.

This is the last real action of the first half as the Penzance attacks keep breaking down in the last third of the pitch.

Penzance start the second half by making a double substitution bring on Danny Magee and Adam Flood for Danny Michael and Bradley Wills. Adam Flood tries to get on the score sheet immediately by firing a 50 yarder goalwards but it goes wide.

Then Perranwell are awarded a second penalty when again Jake Harvey goes down but to us it was outside the box (we were 15yds away), but the ref points to the spot. Mike Brewer steps up to try and get his hat-trick but the keeper dives the right way and palms it out. Justice.

Penzance make another substitution taking off Ross Badcock for Sam Long. Perranwell attack down their right again, cross in, volley but the keeper gets down to push the ball away. Penzance’s substitutions seem to be working as they seem to be pushing forward a bit more and the mid-field is starting to get itself together. But they are not defending well. Perranwell break from the back on the right, cross to the near post, the ball is laid back and from 6yds is volleyed towards the net. Ryan Holland kicks it off the line but the linesman indicates it’s over so Perranwell go 4-0 up in the 64min.

A Penzance corner sees a headed ball cleared off the line, and a series of cross pitch balls end in Penzance shooting just wide. Then Perranwell attack down the centre and a defensive mix-up in at the back sees the keeper come out and have to play it out but he loses it and Steve Brewer has a simple tap in from the edge of the box. 5-0, 69mins.

Then both teams seem to cancel each other out. Adam Flood tries again from long range, a Penzance corner is just flicked enough by the keeper to put the ball out of harms way. A Perranwell attack down the centre results in a volley going wide. The game ends on 45+2mins.

Penzance Man of the Match was a close call as no-one really stood out but we give it to James Street for all the work he had to do at the back.

Penzance – Craig Nicholls, Liam Bennett, Ross Badcock (Sam Long, 56), Ashley Gray, Bradley Wills (Danny Magee, 46), Ryan Holland, James Street, Danny Michael (Adam Flood, 46), Ashley Thomas, Tony Riggall, Jamie Devine

Gotta admit i am not the bigggest pz fan but a young side never the less hope they get over it and put some good performances in. Youth is the way forward. Apart from Floody a legend yes and hopefully many season to play against the him.
