Penzance Reserves 2-0 Portreath

This was Portreath’s first ever league visit to Penlee Park and they came with an idea to frustrate the Magpies. This they did for the first thirty minutes closing the game down to a mid-field battle which on the main they won.

The smallest crowd of the season watched a quiet opening from both teams and had to wait until the 15th minute before there was a half-chance on either goal. Portreath get a free kick on the right, put in a cross pitch ball and a header on the back post is gratefully grabbed by the keeper. Then Penzance get in a back post header from a cross on the right but Liam Bennett puts it wide. Penzance then have another go but an Ashley Thomas header from the 6yd line is grabbed by the keeper.

From a Portreath corner a long range grass cutter is picked up by the keeper. They have a decent chance when they get a free kick on the right, float the ball in but a far post volley goes wide.

Then on 30mins the Portreath keeper makes a fantastic double save. A Penzance through ball to Ashley Gray sees him try a low shot from 15yds that the keeper pushes out, Ashley Thomas following up volleys from 10yds but the keeper pushes it away for a corner. From the corner Penzance go long, work their way around the edge of the box, Ashley Thomas volleys and the keeper finger-tips it over for a corner. Then the keeper makes another great save low at the bottom of the post, from a Penzance free kick when Bradley Wills volleys from a cross pitch ball.

But the Penzance pressure finally succeeds but not before the keeper make another fine save. Penzance get a corner on the right, punt the ball long, the ball comes out, is volleyed in, the keeper makes a save but the rebound doesn’t go kindly for him and Liam Bennett fires a rising volley past him from 10yds out. 1-0 on 37mins.

The final chance of the half falls to Portreath. They work the ball down the right, cross into the box but the Penzance keeper grabs the ball off the feet of Joe Lawrence, who is injured and spends the first few minutes of half-time receiving treatment on the pitvh.

At the start of the second half Penzance substitute Danny Michael for Ryan Holland who is suffering from a cold.

The half starts pretty much as the first with Portreath playing 4-5-1 and stifling the mid-field. Penzance get a half-chance but the ball is scrambled away in the melee.

A Portreath player gets booked for dissent, we think.

Then Penzance increase their lead. Penzance attack down the right, Ross Badcock cleverly beats a player, slips the ball to Danny Michael who fires a low 15yd cross goal volley that wrong foots the keeper. 2-0, 67mins.

Penzance make a substitution and bring on Zack Podd for Adam Flood in the 73rd minute.

Then Portreath put the Penzance goal under a bit of pressure gaining several corners but each is cleared in a variety of ways. A Portreath attack down the left results in a weak shot from the cross. They make a substitution to try and get their attack going.

A Portreath free kick results in a weak header going wide, a shot following a corner goes high and wide.

Then Tom Blaber has a chance to put Portreath on the score sheet. They work the ball down the left, cross, he runs onto it, volleys but the keeper drops onto the ball and pushes it away.

The ref blows for full time a minute or so early but probably thinks there are no more goals left in the match.
