Foxhole 0 Dobwalls 2

Saturday 6th September 2008

A desperately disappointing Foxhole never recovered from conceding in the fourth minute when Bartlett coolly capitalised on indecision between Grose and Holland, and went further behind on 24 when Steve Tapper's fine pass released Bartlett to run beyond a square defence to again finish with aplomb. It might have been even worse by then as Tapper flashed narrowly off-target and only a fine tackle by Hobbs denied Bartlett, who almost clinched a deserved hat-trick but his shot squirmed wide after a clever turn befuddled Prince. Foxhole created nothing, their outnumbered midfield largely anonymous and had only Capeling's needless caution for dissent to show for a woeful first half.

Now backed by the strong wind, the Foxes' best spell came immediately following the break. Glassup denied Nicholls once Capeling had headed back Rowe's free-kick before the big keeper fell smartly to his right to field Butler's daisy-cutter. Grose then centred for Warne to nod against a post from point-blank range, but, after withstanding this brief flurry, Dobwalls regained control, and both Murdoch and Tapper tried their luck from distance. Dillon, on his return to Goverseth, never broke sweat against an ineffective attack, although his booking, also for speaking out of turn, at least provided some much needed light relief for the disgruntled home support, who watched in alarm the mess caused by unconvincing switches to 3-5-2 and then 3-4-3 which served only to magnify the chasm in class between the two teams.

As Friendship looked on from the bench wondering what he had done to be dropped and as Rowe and Capeling waited in vain for a decent ball to attack upfront, Warne, the team's best crosser, languished uneasily as a would-be libero, and watched helplessly six minutes from time when a hesitant Holland was adjudged to have fouled Dan Tapper in the box. Holland redeemed himself with a brilliant save to his left from Bartlett's firmly struck penalty before tipping over Hake's header from the ensuing corner. In a frantic final minute out of keeping with the rest of the match, Bartlett rounded off an eventful performance with a yellow card for tripping Butler, whose corner moments later was flicked on by Rowe for Nicholls to volley the opportunity of a consolation against the bar.
