Illogan v Penzance Match Report

Illogan RBL 2-4 Penzance Reserves

This was the Combo shock result of the day. Previous to this match Illogan had only let in one goal in six matches.

Thankfully the heavy rain showers held off but the ground was slippery underfoot and players slipped over many times during the ninety minutes.

The game kicks off and strait away we see Penzance playing totally different to the team that lost to St Just mid-week. Instead of the long ball they were keeping it on the ground with short crisp passes. Even Illogan played this way and it was a great game to watch.

Penzance had the first couple of chances with Danny Magee working well down the left but his pass goes just behind everyone running in, and then Ashley Thomas down the right puts in a cross that just evades Danny at the back post.

Then Andy Cowper has a chance to put Illogan in front. He accepts a cross pitch ball on the right and just misses with a curling chipped shot from 25yds. He gets another chance a few moments later but is shepherded away from goal and puts it out of play.

Penzance then fire in a long through ball but in their keenness to score both Sam Long and Ashley Thomas tangle when clear on the edge of the box and Ashley fires a weak shot at the keeper.

Just after the half-hour Penzance get on the score sheet. A free kick on the left is booted cross pitch, it bounces out to Ashley Thomas who fires a cross goal volley into the back of the net. They must have heard the 7 Penzance supporters in Redruth!!. 34mins, 0-1.

Illogan keep going forward but are caught out several times by the Penzance off-side trap. A Penzance free kick results in a weak Ryan Holland shot grabbed by the keeper. Then Illogan attack down the right, Darren Holsey slips on the wet grass, they go past, cross and a low shot has the Penzance keeper diving to his left to push it away.

H-T

Illogan start the second half at a fast pace looking for the equaliser. The Penzance keeper is quickly called into action palming away a 30yd direct free kick which goes over the defensive wall. Andy Cowper tries a long range shot but it curls wide, and a header from a cross goes well over the cross bar.

Penzance get more into the match. Ashley Thomas curls a free kick over the wall and just wide of the post from 35yds. Then against the run of play Penzance double their lead. Ashley Thomas works the ball down the right, puts in a perfect cross pitch ball to the back of the box for Danny Magee to volley into the net. 57mins, 0-2.

Four minutes later Illogan get a glimmer of hope as Marcus Smith pulls a goal back. A through ball finds him on the edge of the box, he neatly turns and volleys past the diving keeper. 61mins, 1-2.

A minute later both teams make substitutions with Penzance taking of Sam Long and bringing on Liam Bennett. Liam slips into mid-field as Penzance try to defend their lead and play a 4-5-1 system.

Illogan are now putting the Penzance defence under extreme pressure but they hold firm. At times all the Illogan team apart from the keeper are in the Penzance half. Illogan take off their goal scorer and bring on a fresh set of legs. Then Clark for Illogan gets booked for dissent. An Illogan free kick from 30yds, centre mid-field is volleyed into the keeper’s arms.

Then in the first real chance for 15mins Penzance increase their lead. A long clearance from the back is picked up by Bradley Wills, who looks up and strikes a volley from 35yds into the net. A screamer that gives the keeper no chance and what a way to score your first goal for the Magpies. 1-3, 75mins.

Then almost immediately Bradley gets the chance to add another. A Penzance break down the right, a cross pitch ball to the back post sees him head it against the post and the rebound drops into the keeper’s arms.

Penzance substitute Tony Riggal for Danny Michael in the 83min. A Penzance break on the right sees Danny Magee put a delightful pin-point chip (his dad told me to put that in) onto Ross Badcock’s head but the Illogan keeper makes a brilliant backwards save, finger-tipping the ball over for a corner. Penzance bring on Adam Flood for Mark Grenfell in the 87min.

Illogan by now have given up the fight and it is no surprise when Penzance go further ahead. Ross Badcock puts the ball out to the left for Ashley Thomas who volleys. The balls bounces out of the keeper’s arms and Ross volleys in to make it 1-4 in the 88th minute.

Illogan press forward and are awarded a penalty. The Penzance keeper makes a mistake throwing the ball out under pressure and a tackle goes in to avoid a goal. Andy Cowper makes no mistake putting the ball to the keeper’s left. 2-4, 90+3mins.

A couple of minutes later ref Nigel Nicholls calls a halt to proceedings.
