Recommended Posts

Sorry for the delay, it's been a busy day.

Penzance Reserves 1-3 St Just

If there ever was a trophy for defending to the last man and catching your opponents on the break, then St Just would be sitting on top of the podium. Penzance could have had a hatful if they had taken their chances but credit to St Just, they came to avoid a defeat and went home with all three points.

Once again Penzance seemed to be trying too hard and decided to play the long ball game from the back. It might have worked years ago but defenders nowadays are too wise and perhaps a passing game would have resulted in the Magpies gaining the victory.

As early as the second minute Penzance had a chance to go ahead from a cross pitch ball from the left but the shot was scuffed. A couple of minutes later Penzance had a golden opportunity to go in front. The work the ball down their left, a cross comes in, Glyn Hooper heads it on and Bradley Wills heads it onto the back post but the rebound is deflected for a corner.

Then against the run of play St Just go ahead. A long cross pitch ball sees Neil Curnow run onto it and puts a low volley into the net past a diving Craig Nicholls. 11mins, 0-1.

Another Penzance through ball leads to a weak shot scooped up by Andrew Curnow in the St Just goal. In fact the keeper had a good game as Penzance were putting ball after ball high into the box and he just spent the first half catching them.

Tom Patrick for Penzance shoots wide, a goalmouth scramble results in a Penzance corner, another corner is cleared. Then Penzance put in a long corner that is curling in but is cleared of the line.

St Just get a free kick 25yds out that hits the wall but in the melee Mark Grenfell gets booked for shoving.

Then St Just get a glorious chance to increase their lead in the 34th minute. They get a free kick 45yds out on the left. The ball comes in to the edge of the box where Damien Nicholls, turns and volleys all in one move. The Penzance keeper dives full stretch to palm it away. The whole action brings a large round of applause from the good sized crowd.

Another Penzance through ball results in a weak flick by Glyn Hooper, and Danny Magee slices a volley from a corner. A good Dan Richardson run down the left beating a couple of defenders sees the low cross grabbed by the keeper whilst under pressure.

Then a couple of St Just players get booked for dissent, one being Darren Ball as the pressure gets to them.

The second half follows the same pattern as the first, Penzance facing ten defenders and a seemingly flag happy linesman.

A 30yd Danny Magee volley is just tipped over for a corner. It’s wasted, Another is grabbed by the keeper.

Then Penzance get back on level terms. Danny Magee finds himself on the edge of the box with a little bit of space and blasts it past the diving keeper. There may have been a slight deflection but they all count. 55mins, 1-1.

St Just get their only corner of the half but Craig easily grabs it out of the air. Penzance are now almost totally operating in the St Just half. Tom Patrick shoots just wide of the post, another shot from him is deflected wide.

St Just make 2 substitutions. A St Just player then takes out Danny Magee and is booked for it.

Penzance are still turning the screw. Bradley Wills shoots well over from the edge of the box, the St Just keeper tips one over the bar when under pressure, a crossed Penzance ball ends in a tame shot by Tom Patrick.

Then on 75mins Penzance substitute their best player. On comes Liam Bennett for Danny Magee.

Then against the run of play St Just come down their left, cross and Tom Welch volleys in from 15yds. 75mins, 1-2.

A couple of minutes later a bit of hand bags at dawn on the edge of the Penzance box results in a couple of yellow cards. Darren Holsey for Penzance, but for St Just they are reduced to ten men as it is the player’s second bookable offence.

Penzance make a couple of substitutions bringing on Ashley Gray and Mark Vercesi for ??? and ???.

The St Just goal is leading a charmed life, shots are deflected, bodies thrown in the way of the ball. Then with 9 Penzance players in the St Just half, St Just hoof it forwards, they break on the left and from fully 40yds out Stefan Smith fires a curling volley that beats the keeper. 90+2, 1-3, it’s all over.
