St Agnes 3-4 Penzance Reserves

This game was marred by the serious injury to Penzance defender Ryan Andrew and was held up for 40 minutes whilst an ambulance was called and took him to hospital.

St Agnes wore their tradition black and white striped tops so Penzance changed into their red and black kit.

The game got off to a slow start with both teams making probing runs but they amounted to nothing. In fact it seemed Penzance were trying too hard and their play had a slight edge of panic. After a few minutes their first real chance of the match ended in a goal. A cross field ball from Ryan Holland sees Tom Patrick run in from the left to put a low volley past the advancing John Mitchell in the St Agnes goal. 0-1, 6mins.

Penzance win a corner a couple of minutes later. They put a long one in and a St Agnes player on the back post goes down like a sack of spuds hit in the face by a rising Bradley Wills volley. The game is held up for a few minutes whilst treatment is administered.

On the resumption of play St Agnes get a free kick on the right. They float the ball in a nearly score with a header at the back post flying just wide of the upright.

On 20mins Ryan Andrew gets injured. He goes in for a tackle misses and falls badly. It is one of those freak accidents. He’s made comfortable whilst an ambulance is called. The game is held up while he receives treatment from the crew before he is driven off to hospital. We all send our best wishes.

Play resumes with Danny Michael coming on to replace Ryan. Penzance are a bit subdued and it take them a few minutes to get back up to steam. St agnes work the ball down their left, shoot but the ball is grabbed out of the air by the Penzance keeper.

Then on 36 minutes St Agnes get the ball into the net. They get a free kick on the right, 30yds out near the touchline. The ball is floated in, cleared, in again, then Steve Kemp in the centre of the box volleys in from 10yds. 1-1, 36mins.

A Penzance break on the right sees the ball crossed but it evades 3 runners coming in. A few seconds later a long ball from the St Agnes back sees a player try to chip the advancing keeper. The keeper jump, gets his fingertips to it but the ball still carries on it goalwards journey. To help it along Tom Benny runs in and volleys the ball into an empty net from 15yds. 2-1, 45+1min.

They say a team is at it’s weakest when it has just scored a goal (as happened to Penzance against Holman last Tuesday evening) and St Agnes proved the old saying correct. Strait from their kick off Penzance break and Ashley Thomas runs down the right and volleys in the equaliser from the edge of the box. 2-2, 45+2mins

The second half sees St Agnes upping their game coming forward and putting Penzance under quite a bit of pressure. To take the pressure off themselves Penzance pass the ball around at the back a few times. Then against the run of play Penzance get their noses in front again.

A long clearance, a flick on through ball on the left sees Tom Patrick run into it a place a curved shot around the advancing keeper. The ball had more curl on it than a ladies perm. 56mins, 2-3.

Then a minute later we have a bit of de-ja-vu as the same thing happens but on the right. Tom gets his hatrick. 57mins, 2-4.

This double blow seems to wake St Agnes up and they press forward. A long free kick is headed over the bar, a rising shot goes the same way, and it’s not long before they are on the score sheet again. They come down their right, the ball bounces up hitting their player’s arm. Penzance appeal for a handball, hesitate waiting for the ref’s whistle but in the meantime the player volleys low into the net. 3-4, 63mins.

Both teams make a couple of substitutions. St Agnes are now up for it and are pushing for an equaliser. They get 3 corners in a row. On the 3rd they push the ball out to the edge of the box and fire inwards. The ball bounces to one of their players on the 6yd line who fires in a volley but Craig Nicholls makes a great diving one handed save to push the ball away.

By now the game is end to end with a lot of raised voices as a few of the ref’s decisions seem to baffle the players and there are tackles and handballs going unpunished. In the 85min James Street gets his name in the book for a tackle from behind.

The ref calls time after a couple of minutes over the ninety to finish quite an exciting match.

Could anyone give us an update on Ryan Andrew and his arm injury please and pass on our best wishes for a speedy recovery - even though he made that ambulance drive across our pitch!

Thank you!

He has broken both the bones in the upper part of his forearm. He is returning to the hospital on Wednesday to see if he needs pins etc. Hopefully not.

Could you thank your physio and everyone else who helped at the time.
