Newquay 0 Foxhole 4

Saturday 9th August 2008

Weakened Foxhole completed a routine, low-key victory at Mount Wise where the dismal conditions inevitably contributed to the scrappy nature of most of the play. Watson nearly scored in the opening seconds but his shot was headed off the line by Russell before, on 8 minutes, Weldhen spurned Newquay's best chance of the game, volleying over at the far post from Lawrence's corner. On the quarter hour, Billy Holland's poor kick was seized on by Butler, whose run was only halted by Russell's lunge. Rowe despatched the penalty but the Foxes failed to build on the lead despite numerous opportunities, although Griffin was only denied by Atkinson's last-ditch block while Friendship's close range effort was dubiously ruled offside.

Merrikin took over between the sticks for the home team after the break and was soon called into action, first from Nicholls' volley, and then from May's fierce drive. Butler also went close before, on 62, Friendship's fine centre was spectacularly headed past his own keeper by Atkinson. As conditions deteriorated further, and with Billy Holland making an unlikely re-appearance at centre-half, Foxhole added two late goals their superiority deserved. On 74, Merrikin could only parry Butler's swerving 20-yarder into the path of a grateful Nicholls and, four minutes later, Butler released Griffin to finish coolly off the near post. Although Weldhen, generally well-marshalled by the youthful visiting defence, lobbed lazily too high when favourably placed, well-beaten Newquay were soon indebted to Bevan's goal-line clearance from Griffin's volley to keep the score respectable.
