Foxhole v Falmouth

Recommended Posts

Foxhole 4 Falmouth 1

Saturday 26th July 2008

Foxhole impressively saw off their youthful visitors with a great display of short passing and clever movement, with newcomer Tom Watson at the heart of everything. Chances were created from the off, Bromley scuffing wide from Grose's cross, Butler heading Faircloth's fine centre straight at Mitchell, while Rowe pulled an effort past the upright when sent clear, before Watson opened his account on 26. Grose's long-range shot appeared to be sailing harmlessly wide, but Friendship refused to give up the ghost and teed up Watson to sidefoot home from 10 yards.

Falmouth's midfield quintet were unable to dominate the home trio despite their numerical advantage, although debutants Hobbs and French had to be on their toes against the lively visiting strikers. Andrew was proving particularly elusive and ought to have done better than tamely heading wide Thomas' cross, but Holland was largely redundant, although he did have to beat away a piledriver from Grant, and was relieved to see the rebound scrambled away. Like Watson, Bromley was prominent, making frequent supporting bursts into the box from deep, or constantly feeding Butler out wide, while Rowe's physical presence up front ensured Burton and Wolstencroft had an uncomfortable afternoon in the sunshine.

Against the run of play Falmouth equalised three minutes after the restart, sloppy defending allowing the unmarked Andrew to nod Appleton's centre past Holland from six yards. However, the Foxes continued to attack with purpose and, after Rowe had had a goal ruled marginally offside, Hill headed back May's deep cross for Watson to restore the lead on the hour from a tight angle. Four minutes later, Warne released Hill to outpace Davies and unselfishly square for Rowe to tap in at the far post.

The awesome Watson was displaying a range of clever touches, carving open opportunities for Warne (whose drive was saved), and the unfortunate Rowe (who was again denied only by a linesman's flag) before being withdrawn for one of the six substitutes to warm applause from the Goverseth faithful. The final 20 minutes fell rather flat in comparison, although Nicholls twice went close until, with six minutes left, Hill set up Bromley to blast a daisy cutter beyond Mitchell from the edge of the box to round off an excellent team performance.
