Changes on and off pitch for Porthleven

FORMER Porthleven manager John Clarkson has renewed his links with the Gala Park club after agreeing to become its president.

Now spending much of his time abroad, he still has many business interests in this country and also has a home in the Duchy.

Clarkson cemented his place in the Fishermen's history books by becoming the club's only manager to win the Cornwall Senior Cup.

Clarkson is not the only new face at the club with a number of changes taking place during the summer months.

On the administrative side the club has a new treasurer with Penny Andrewartha succeeding Jill Green who has stood down. Jill, a stalwart at the club, will still be involved on match days in a number of roles.

With goalkeeper Sid Taylor moving to Penzance, along with a number of other players such as James Miller, Andy Westgarth, Jamie Burr and Mark Hollands, manager Gary Marks has been busy filling the gaps.

Adrian Farrell, who has moved in the opposite direction from Penzance to Porthleven, joins as assistant manager to Marks, but there are also two new coaches in Matt George and Tad Shrimpton.

The latter's name will not mean much to today's youngsters, but to those who are now fast approaching pensioner status, they will certainly remember Tad's mother, Jean Shrimpton, as being one of the most iconic fashion models of the 1960s and who these days lives a quiet live in Penzance. However, Tad is his own man and has had coaching experience with Premiership club Fulham.

On the playing side Marks has brought in a number of young players to join his new skipper Steve Warr and vice-captain Martin Day.

Goalkeeper Danny Burrows has joined from Illogan along with Josh Kemp and two players have joined from Falmouth Town, utility defender/midfielder Wayne Brown and playmaker Darren Burchell. Illogan's Simon Ellis is also expected to sign.

Striker Paul Robinson, a regular scorer in the struggling Goonhavern side of last season, will relish the opportunity to play in a much better side that will also have familiar faces such as Hugh Howlett and Jamie Thirkle. Thirkle has returned from a tour of duty with the services.

Port kicked off their pre-season friendlies with a double header at RNAS Culdrose on Sunday, which brought two wins, and follow that with the Dave Gardner Memorial tournament.

The four-way tournament sees the Fishermen at home to Penzance on Saturday followed by a another home game against Helston on Wednesday, July 30, kick off 7.30 pm. The series is completed with a visit to Falmouth Town on Saturday, August 2, kick off 5 pm.

Holmans complete the friendlies on Saturday, August 8, with matches against the Ist and 2nd XIs

IF IN THE PAST YOU HAVE HAD A PERSONAL PROBLEM WITH MR CLARKSON, THEN THAT IS YOUR BUISNESS, WE AS A CLUB, HAVE CERTAINLY NOT. PORTHLEVEN FC IS OBVIOUSLY NOT YOUR CLUB SO I DONT FEEL THAT YOU SHOULD BE COMING ON A SOCCER FORUM & GIVING YOUR OPINION ON HOW OR WHO SHOULD BE INVOLVED IN IT !!!!! LETS JUST STICK TO GIVING OUR OPINIONS ON HOW " OUR OWN " CLUB IS BEING RUN !!!! :angry2:

i know we are heading in the direction of a nanny state but at the moment we are still allowed to voice an opinion, soon we won't be allowed to think for ourselves so lets enjoy it whilst we can eh.

Hope it works out for Porthleven and I'm sure those at Liskeard had high ambitions this time last season
