Foxhole 5 Marlborough Town 0

Saturday 19th July 2008

New look Foxhole began their season with an emphatic, if rather flattering, victory as they were indebted to a fine display by Ryan Holland, who thwarted the lively Marlborough attack with numerous excellent saves. Five fresh faces were named in a 16-man squad missing another 5 on holiday; one debutant, Mooney, floated over a free-kick in the third minute which centre-forward Rowe headed on for Nicholls to tap home the opener, with the visitors vainly claiming pushing.

Marlborough then settled to play some tidy stuff, exposing a less than dominant home rearguard strangely reluctant to attack the high ball. Maximen, an early arrival from the bench, proved particularly elusive to Bullock and Hooper with his tight control and strong running, but neither he or diminutive strike partner Webb were able to find a way past the keeper. Against the run of play, Foxhole doubled their lead on 39, Rowe's quickly taken free-kick finding Griffin to finish coolly.

The tourists twice went close within seconds of the restart. First Jennings' snapshot was well fielded by Holland, whose poor kick fell straight to Webb, but the lob from 35 yards dropped narrowly wide. The Foxes, now employing Rowe as a sweeper, were being cut wide open with no little regularity but Holland stood firm; incredibly, after a lengthy spell under siege, they broke away to notch a third on 70, Nicholls' hopeful ball into space being gathered by the electric Hill, whose shot from the touchline was gleefully turned in at the far post by Griffin.

Substitute Watson, also on debut, displayed some flashes of neat skill and saw an effort from 20 yards well saved by Jackson, but blotted his copybook by fouling Blanchard and was cautioned by Johns, who showed rather more leniency to Griffin, having a typical tussle with a somewhat startled Henry. Shortly after Hill had sliced wide after a great dribble, May released Griffin down the left, and the marine's fine cross on the run was turned in by the sliding Warne with 16 minutes left.

The visitors, led by the increasingly impressive and brilliantly named Maximen, strove boldly for a consolation and Holland again denied Webb after Hooper had missed a routine clearance, before the scoreline was given an even more surreal air a minute from time when Mabberley dwelt interminably on the ball, and was robbed by the alert Friendship who teed up Warne to drive home the fifth off the upright.
