Youth Academy Disbanded

Guest General Manager

Heard earlier today, that the Head of Youth - Steve Matthews, and his team of highly qualified coaches have all been released with immediate effect. Steve will be paid a months notice, but the coaches will get nothing.

This was the Plymouth Argyle Youth Development team that Heaney brought to the club to help secure the long term future of the club. After picking up 9 trophies yesterday - i would imagine it was a bit of a shock to the guys!

As a parent of one of the boys that was taken by Steve to play Chelsea a couple of weeks ago - I am absolutely gutted. His coaches (including 1st team keeper chappy), were absolutely fantastic with those boys and girls. They have developed the players so much more than they would of done normally and have allowed the managers to sit back and manage!

I think that this is very short-sighted by the club. Already, some other parents within the very successful U16 team that have just won the league and have included many County players, have called an unofficial meeting to maybe pull away from the club.

What the hell is going on! I know the property market is bad - but Heaney was valued at £154 million yesterday in the times rich list - that comes with about £30 grand a day in interest.

Next up - Newquay/Truro Ladies. - Bye bye.

It was suggested less than a fortnight ago on the unofficial Truro City Forum that someone called Lee Barrow had been appointed as the Head Of Youth Development.

Is this right and therefore is Mr Barrow merely replacing Steve Matthews and so the Youth system will continue?

Dave,

General Manager is correct with his comments - very worrying development, I thought the future of the club was Youth. Gravely concerned.

Remember that £154m isn't cash in a building society accruing interest! No 30K per day. It is an estimate of the value of property, businesses, assorted assets - all of which (like the value of your house) can go down if the economy has a hiccup. (I'm an old socialist, really, but I just thought I'd explain the fiscal details!)

Looking at the way things have unfolded with the other recent changes at Truro I am sure there will be another official statement soon which will hopefully put it all into perspective - especially for those parents and children who have been part of the youth set up at Truro this year!

I wonder what will happen as regards the Ladies Team - so far that seems to be the only group not mentioned - oh and the veterans of course.

I am sure there will be some proper announcement to quell the concerns although as ECLP queried earlier the PR seems a bit behind the news and it seem a great shame the members of the youth section parents etc were not informed first.

Plenty of room for youth players at Perranporth :D We're looking at fielding under 10, under 12 & under 15 next season but can add other age groups if numbers allow

I think we will hang onto them if its all the same to you!!!!

I think you should put a nice long piece in that new free paper out your way Around Piran telling everyone what a great season you have had and invite loads of those youngsters to join you pre-season! Send me some pictures of your end of season kids day too - I'll put some of them in as well!

I think there are about 20 teams - some with youngsters that moved from other clubs - we will see what happens iamthebest!

Maybe all the players that played for truro that were lured away from their local teams to play for the club in the first place may return to their previous club. This may cause problems as many may not be too welcome back after leaving last season!! Its a shame for local youth football and very short sighted from many parents in the first place.

Go back to your local team, play with your friends and enjoy your football. There has never been a problem with developing talent in the county this way before.

More loyalty required all over.

Rant over

Grant is absolutely spot on. Clubs have had there best talent cherry-picked, players & parents have had their heads turned.

There is a post on the Truro City Youth Forum bemoaning the fact that now, as a parent they will now have to contribute to pitch fees, training & kit. Welcome back to the real world of youth football that the rest of us are used to.

I have no doubt that these young players have been used in the furtherance of some aim of th heirachy of the club. I wonder what part Chris Webb is playing in this. I was around when he first set up the acadamy 5/6 years ago. He was instrumental in setting up and was totally committed to the young players in Truro.

It may be a disappointment to these players, but it would be nice to see them return to their home clubs and restore some competition back to the youth leagues. There are players around the league who have ties with league and non-league clubs, so if your good enough you will be noticed. Enjoy your football wherever your playing.

It all looks very naughty, St D and it always did. I remember reading the kids were being charged sity-five quid to be able to play under the Truro banner. I didn't like it at the time. To be charged to use the facilities in some way isn't so bad but to be charged a set fee can't be right.

I would imagine that the main purpose of setting up Truro youth academy was to produce local players who would eventually filter into the first team via their third and second teams. However, despite a successful season for the club I find it disappointing that Truro were unable to give an opportunity to any potentially talented youth players to have a taste of 1st team/2nd team football i.e. same old names/professional links etc. Such actions would give Truro youth players an incentive, rather than thinking they're always being overlooked. This opportunity clearly existed for both managers this year, just look at the final scores!

With no hope of progressing through the system, many younger players might consider to gain experience elsewhere. However, due to the financial constraints anticipated at TCFC next year and the disbandment of the youth academy, next season may be the best opportunity for any youngester to make their mark at the club. A blessing in disguise for some?

The tenner is in the bucket already - but do slow down a moment coz I think they also have some younger teams too who also don't play in the Kernow League - I will research this and let you know how much you owe too! I know when Mr Heaney was marching on Carrick they definitely said 20 Youth Teams - i feel it is my duty to find the lost 4 and make sure you have to pay up as well!

A pleasure doing business with you - especially for charity! Mandyx

I think if they have little friendlies they could be constituted as teams we never said they had to play league matches - I am going to ask an official grown up somewhere to make a decision on this - or perhaps we could take a vote as to whether iamthebest should just pay up anyway????? It is for charity after all?
