Reflections on Parkway 2 Wimborne 1

Recommended Posts

In the end a fully merited 3 points for Parkway and a  second period where we saw what 'coule be' given time. However, it took a needless dismissal for the visitors to swing the game. Before that Parkway didn't lay a glove on the visitors ".keeper.

The first half saw tedious tippy happy football from Parkway with the ball going backwards or sideways too often to no great end. Town moved the ball quicker and a free header saw them take the lead. They almost doubled their lead a few minutes later in the same fashion. Poor defending!

What did amuse me was whilst PPFC played 'Southgate style'  possession football, Taylor Scarf - an old school centre half hasn't got the memo - he launched the ball higher than an Elon Musk rocket launch on several occasions! To be fair to Taylor, in part this may due to a lack of movement in front of him

53 minutes saw an idiotic dismissal surrounding a turned down penalty appeal. Two minutes later, Ryan Brett with a sumptuous run and cross saw Beardsmore level. From then on it was all Parkway. Three top saves from Rutter between the sticks for Wimborne. The winner itself came after 70 minutes with MOTM Rio Garside lashing home from about 12 yards

This was my second visit to Bolitho Park this season. As with the Taunton game, it took going behind for Parkway to up the tempo. Why? There is a softness in defence too. That said, to stay up, beating competent but unremarkable teams, such as Wimborne, particularly at home will be key to survival. So mission accomplished last night.

Experienced players like Brett, White and Williams also pivotal. The side seems lopsided and too inexperienced. Their needs to be more vocal leaders on the pitch. Maybe this is down to inexperience?

The playing of the Wizard at the back seems utterly baffling to me. It's like having Ronaldo on the books and asking him to play in the back four. It's been happing for quite a time. I just don't get it!

Some of the 'dogs of war' mentality you saw under Hobbs and a less purist style of play, or at least varying patterns more, might aid their quest to survive  This is not to overlook a very decent second 45 from the Yellows. A striker is critical I think. For all the pretty football I see no-one who'll get the 15 goals plus to ease the Plymouth boys to safety.

An interesting evening of football and pleased that Parkway got that elusive win

Not a lot from BSOTT there that I can disagree with. The league performances, if not results, have been on a gradual upwards trajectory the last month or so, but as you say, there is that nagging issue that we need to have a man advantage to start playing 'front-foot' football. That's not something I was expecting when it was announced Lee and Karl would be replaced by two former professional strikers. The striker position has been an issue for a number of years now, and it's not (as a few supporters on here, on twitter, and in-person at games have said) since Ben Seymour left. In the season he was down here, in games he didn't score, Parkway only won 7. In previous seasons, however, there have been goals from elsewhere, whether that be from out wide with Mikey Williams, Ryan Richards, Jack Crago; midfield with players like Billy Palfrey and River Allen; or dominating from set pieces with Rob Farkins, Nick Milton, Aaron Bentley.

On Mikey Williams, whilst it is odd and sometimes frustrating that the management insist on playing him as a full back, I can understand it. The problem for me is that he's too good at too many aspects of the game. We all know how fantastic he is, and we all remember just how dangerous he was when he was playing from the right wing in the Western League and Southern Div 1 seasons, but he is also a fantastic defender. In the first half especially, when he was playing on my side of the pitch, it was noticeable how much instruction he was giving to his centre half and winger, which is something we've been shouting for other players who've played right back to do for weeks. When he did make one of his trademark jinking runs forward with the ball, and it was turned over, he also wasn't ever really too far away from his opposite number leaving the right hand side vulnerable.

They are obviously a very young and inexperienced team, especially in attack, and I think that, especially with Parkway being desperate for results, leads to players being 'afraid' to take a shot on themselves and would rather play the extra pass to avoid being the one to muck up the final shot. I believe it was Jimmy Murphy who said 'the fans will forgive a player who misses, but not the player who doesn't take the shot on' or words to that effect.

We had a lot (8 I think) of players unavailable last night, McPhee had to name himself on the bench again, and I can't recall us playing the same 11 for two consecutive games yet this season. With the inclusion of James Morley on the bench last night, we have now also named more players in matchday squads (33) than the entirety of last season, and we're only 19 games in. That isn't going to help putting together a run of results to start looking to rise up the table. Once the side settles down, and they start performing like the second half last night for a full 90 minutes, there will be further improvements to results.

Agree with both comments there . I have to say I’ve struggled to enjoy some of the football this season as it seem to be all about possession and there never seem to be any change from the system

You do wonder tho if the red card didn’t happen and parkway lost if McPhee would been under some  serous pressure. Maybe Rio Garside saved his job like mark robins did for fergie all them years ago.

Both Lee Hobbs and Darren Way were in attendance on Tuesday night which got a few tongues wagging. Can't see McPhee being under too much pressure until around Christmas myself though, even if results don't come.

Hobbs was at the Taunton game I attended too. I wouldn't read too much into it. Who, of *note*, would want to inherit someone else's (average)  squad and the Parkway budget mid-season?
