St merryn 2- 5 Calstock

Not going to lie, but as a manager going to a side who had won 9 out of 9 games this season I was a bit worried we were turning up with a depleted squad, many due to a few players seeing we didn't have a game fixtures so decided to go on holiday this week. But saying that the depth we have I knew the 12 + myself had the quality to compete.

I knew St merryn would want to have the majority of possession and that aspect isn't our style. Our central midfield was too deep in the early stages which lead to early pressure but a quick counter attack down our left ended up in a penalty for a handball from a pulled back cross, which Ryan Smale dispatched. Quickly after Ben Williams was hacked down on the edge of the box. Ex sky football icon winner Jaimie Ashley who is our sponsor and filling in today rifled in the resulting free kick. St Merryn with the height advantage pulled a goal back from a header from a deep free kick before Smale volleyed in from a free kick of our own before HT for his 2nd.

2nd half started with the home side pushing to get back into the game with very little going forward from us. St Merryn got a 2nd by our right back failing to clear his line numerous times and their winger beating our keeper at the near post. Most sides would take this opportunity to get a foothold back in the game but we quickly scored through Smale completing his hat trick and olly Costa getting his 18th goal of the season. Seemed to take the sting out of the game with the final 10 minutes.

Well spirited game, well refereed. We wish St Merryn well this season, hopefully they can stay undefeated in the league as that itself is a major achievement.

Falmouth United vs Goonhavern Athletic Junior cup

Falmouth looked to secure their place in the quarter finals, like they had done in the previous season (losing out in the semi finals to winners Dropship) Goonhavern took the 40 minute trip down to Falmouth looking to secure a place in the quarter finals as well but unfortunately only one team can go through.

One of Falmouth players was playing against his former club and received a few messages leading up to the game

14:00 KICK OFF Falmouth

They wanted to use the size of the pitch to their advantage to stretch Goonhavern which they did creating chances but nothing dangerous, easy saves for keeper. Goonhavern wanted to hit Falmouth with quick counter attacks as their impressive winger n.10 seemed to be their danger man and getting the ball to his feet and inbehind for him to run into but again nothing came from it. Falmouth had 2 massive opportunities  to take the lead but they missed both (one of them was pretty much an open goal) eventually Falmouth took the lead with the keeper hitting long, falling perfectly to the wingers run slotting in n.33 shooting first time goonhavern keeper saved however it wasn’t strong enough as Falmouths striker continued his run making sure the ball crossed the line 1-0. Falmouth starting to apply lots of pressure but Goonhavern stayed resilient and not breaking. All of a sudden one of the Goonhavern players sin bin (personally very harsh) and they were reduced to 10 men. Apart from a few late challenges and yellow cards nothing really else happened in the first half.

Goonhavern started the second half and as Falmouth made some changes bringing on fresh legs and it seemed to have made an instant impact as they pressed hard retaining the ball and Falmouth captain played a outstanding ball through the defence for the striker n.31 to run on to who attempted to score but was denied by a great save but once again wasn’t strong enough and he continued his run to pass it into an empty net 2-0 (Next goal was massive game on if goonhavern scores? Game over if Falmouth score?) Falmouth continued to pepper the Goonhavern defence and it took a little bit of magic from n.33 who played an exquisite ball over the top of the defenders for n.31 to run onto perfectly executing the ball into the bottom right corner at a full stretch keeper making it 3-0. The ref continued to hand out more slices of cheese (a lot of them I disagree with it’s a contact sport, felt like both teams being punished too harshly) Falmouth seemed to have forgotten how to score once that third goal went it as they was blazing loads of chances over the bar out of the ground. Goonhavern was awarded a penalty for a handball and converted comfortably 3-1 game on? Minutes later Falmouth reduced to 10 men all the momentum with Goonhavern but Falmouth stayed composed just keeping the ball letting Goonhavern chase after the ball seeing the game out. Full time Falmouth 3 Goonhavern 1

Credit to the young Goonhavern side didn’t stop kept going for 90 minutes lot of young talent in the squad especially the tricky winger and captain. Thank you to Goonhavern for coming back to the pub really appreciated it and good luck for the rest of the season

Once again thank you to the referee for taking his time to officiate our game we all appreciate it
