Enjoyable evening at Lantoom to see Southgate Seniors create a bit of history by becoming the last ever Duchy Premier League Champions!! Got to say they were made to work really hard for it by a lively Dobwalls team who started the better team and included fit as a fiddle 58 year old Roger Quaintance at the back and he’s still as big a winner as he ever was back in his old SWL days with Liskeard!! A tough opponent but top bloke.

In fact Samrat? missed a great chance to open the scoring dragging his shot wide before it was punished at he other end a few minutes later when Dylan Boundy nipped in before the keeper to prod home against the run of play. It was a fast paced physical game due in thanks to the great ref Martin Ruffin who tried to play advantage at all times to keep the ball fizzing around the pitch.

The 2nd half saw Samrat deservedly equalise with about 20 mins to go before an eventful 79th minute saw Samip Pokharel smash a 20 yarder off the crossbar for the hosts before the visitors went straight up the other end and hit the post through Boundy. A couple of strikers caught my eye, the hosts tall mobile target man Ben Gaynor and the visitors lively forward Liam Rich, fast, direct with quick feet.

The all important Championship winning goal came 7 minutes from time with a powerful far post header from big tall centre half Jake Murrain. There was almost still time for another equaliser but Gaynor headed straight at Southgate Stand in keeper and player manager In the 89th minute and the title was Southgates!! With challengers Boscastle beating Lifton 5-0 at home it proved to be a massive goal! Great to meet Dobwalls sub and Lino John Drinkell himself still playing at 54!! And nice to see one of our top SWL refs Kevin Hoare there watching his impressive son Milo win the league for Southgate.
