Launceston Cup Final

Recommended Posts

The oldest trophy to win, traditionally on a Sunday but this season on a Tuesday under the lights kindly put on at Pennygillam. The semis saw Nick and Darren Heywoods North Petherwin beat St Breward and Kilkhampton get past Pensilva on pens. The final tonight was closely contested with Kilk starting well before Ben Sharpe struck the bar twice for the Badgers. Ht 0-0. The match saw both defences resolute up until 85mins when Petherwin went ahead with a Sharpe shot deflecting off the advancing keeper into the net. On 90 the supersub Darren Samways picked up a loose clearance to chip the ball 35yds into an empty goal to secure the Badgers a second engraving on the historical cup. Ref Dave Green officiated well alongside Chris Sillifant and Adrian Clements.  Man of the match Matt Stainer. Thanks to the all on the committee that organise the cup.

Was going to put a little report on but no need as that’s absolutely spot on Mongoose! Thought exactly the same, Kilkhampton started the sharper forcing a few corners then the Badgers hit the bar against the run of play in the 27th minute and got more into it and hit the bar again in the 36th before half time with two great strikes. Sharpes goal that broke the deadlock in the 87th minute was going well wide until it clipped the keepers shoulder deflecting it into the net but he deserved that bit of luck I thought after being so unlucky with his two shots that hit the bar earlier, and as Mongoose said an unfortunate poor clearance from the keeper was punished sending it back into the empty net 2 minutes into injury time to clinch it, agreed the officials did a fine job and a great crowd of 193 to enjoy the evening! My first experience of the Launceston cup final and I’ll definitely be going again hopefully! Good competitive game between two good teams and met some nice people like you often do at our local footie matches 👏🏼👍
