Padstow 2 Charlestown 1

A breezy afternoon at Jury Park but not so windy that it affected the game. Charlestown pulled out all the stops to ensure they were able to fulfil the fixture despite losing 10 players during the week either to injury or because of work commitments, including signing two players in the last 24 hours - one only 16yo - and bringing them both straight into the team.

The first half started with a frenetic opening 10 minutes but after it settled down Charlestown had the bulk of both possession and chances. Despite their chances though they never really troubled Padstow’s keeper who confidently dealt with everything that came her way. And perhaps slightly against the run of play it was Padstow who took a 1-0 lead into the break after Florence Jones pounced on a loose ball from a corner to score her first ever competitive goal.

Playing with the wind behind them in the second half Padstow increasingly dominated the game. Midway through the 2nd half they doubled their lead when Helena Lorenzen intercepted a goal kick and hit it first time back over the Charlestown’s keeper’s head.

Charlestown were never out of it though and did claw one back on 81 minutes when their POTM Beata Benedek slotted home from a rebound after Padstow’s keeper saved a fierce shot from just inside the box.

Padstow held on to win 2-1, their second half performance enough to earn them a deserved three points. Full credit to Charlestown though for making this such a close and entertaining game in difficult circumstances.

And full credit to referee Gary Cornish too - a flawless performance.

Overall POTM Padstow’s Eleanor Brown.
