WADEBRIDGE  (2)   2     Smale 27’   Beare 43’

PENZANCE  (0)  0

ATT :  63

A comfortable win in the end for the Bridgers against a well organised Penzance team who defended admirabley with numbers behind the ball but always had a threat on the break. The hosts started on the front foot with captain Tom Strike having his header from a corner plucked out the top corner by visiting keeper Micky Flores after 5 minutes. After 14’ a cross field pass from Jacob Smale out wide right to Jack Rapsey saw him whip a cross behind the defence to the far post but Matt Lloyd half volleyed over the bar on the stretch. A minute later a Charlie Willis cross saw Lloyd head the ball down but straight at Flores. At the other end Rolandas Samnauskas shot over the bar from the edge of the area on 17’.

After 24 minutes a great step over from Rapsey saw him cut inside from the left to feed Smale and his strong run through the middle was blocked by Flores rushing off his line to block. ️The hosts took the lead after 27 minutes when a sharp turn and defence splitting pass from Rapsey saw Sam Gerken drill a cross in to Lloyd and as he was about to shoot he was brought down but referee Mr Tom Anstice-Mitchell played some excellent advantage to allow Smale to smash home the loose ball from 10 yards. Silus Sullivan was having a busy game at the back for the Magpies being accidentally caught in the head by a high foot from Rapsey before minutes later getting in a tangle on the floor with Lloyd and the visitors arguing that he deserved more than the yellow card received which the visitors bench continued the grievance at the half time whistle with the referee. Alex Ralph broke clear on the right in a rare Penzance attack but his shot from an angle had the sting taken out of it by Rob Roseveare on the way to claiming his second clean sheet in 4 days and the danger was cleared by Ewan Reeves and Gerken.

️Matters were made worse for the visitors when Wadebridge doubled their lead on 43’ minutes when an excellent 25 yard free kick from Strike cannoned back off the crossbar with the ball falling to Rapsey who cushioned a pass into the path of Ross Beare who shot low into the net from 10 yards. There was just time for Flores to make a diving save to his left right on half time from a Rapsey shot from the edge of the area.

The 2nd half lacked the intensity of the end to the 1st half with the Bridgers trying to impose their passing game on the visitors particularly down the right with overlapping attacking right full back Gerken with Tom Harris working hard to do the same on the left without the Bridgers creating too many opportunities against the hard working defence in which Sullivan and Tyler Tonkin were working overtime getting a block or a foot in. The hosts finally created a chance on the hour mark when Rapsey flicked a header on from Rosevears big kick upfield for Willis to run on to and cut a cross back but the lively Smale shot over the bar from 15 yards. On 68’ Rapsey flicked the ball over Sullivans head with his right foot to hit a near post volley with his left that was well beaten out by the reflexes of Flores and on 73’ a strong run past 3 defenders by Morgan Vallejo ended with his powerful shot going inches wide of the far post with Flores beaten.

The Bridgers utilised all of their subs bench bringing on all 5 substitutes from the 65th minute onwards and it altered the flow of the game somewhat for the hosts with Penzance going on to have their best spell of the match in the last 15 minutes forcing a few corners that were cleared by experienced defender and Cornish legend Steve Simmonds marshalling the home backline with his superb positional play. On 84’ Samnauskas blasted over at the far post when well placed and the hard working Sullivan headed just over the bar from yet another corner and the chance of any consolation goal was gone as the hosts went on to see out injury time fairly comfortably without any late chances at either end of note for a welcome 3 points to maintain their 4th position in the table with 5 wins from their opening 7 matches and Penzance travelling back down west with their heads held high from a hard working performance that Macca, Adrian and Nicksy will take plenty of positives from I would have thought, a well organised, hard to break down and competitive team on the day.

*photo of one of Penzance defender Silas Sullivans typically brave headers during the game but being caught accidentally in the face on this occasion from the Bridgers Rappo with Lloydy looking on* Taken by the good wife by the way! I’m useless at photos!

Great report Rappo, just one change, referee today was Tom Anstice-Mitchell who stepped in mid-week due to an unfortunate injury which meant Mike was unable to officiate today 😁

Thanks for that Dave! Sorry just went by the match programme! Poor journalism!!😀 I should have checked with Bridgers excellent secretary Andy, apologies. Tom had an excellent match I thought. Brilliant advantage played on the opening goal amongst many good decisions. 👏🏼👏🏼

Penzance management team are embarrassing always having a go at the referees

I watched Penzance a few games back. Was it a large gentleman with a bauld head?

Talks absoulte  nonsense if it's the same guy I saw couple weeks back, had no idea at all.

Managers usually blame referees when they don't have any idea about how to do their own roles in an effective way.

A very long winter ahead for Penzance, Launceston, Bodmin.

Leeds be interesting to hear your thoughts on  the direction Bodmin are going in. Maybe a manager change is needed already?

Dobwalls 3 St Dennis 2

Entertaining game at Dobwalls, Dobwalls had a few early chances but failed to take them and then St Dennis, who didn’t look like a team struggling in the league took a two goal lead, both goals being scored by Oxley. The second goal, a good volley by Oxley although off his shin, this was when Dobwalls had a stand in goalie as Toby Chapman was sin binned for disputing a decision with the referee. Possibly a little harsh as no bad language was involved but when will players learn that referees will not change their decisions and to keep arguing the point will only result in sin bins or bookings. Two nil at half time but with the wind behind them Dobwalls were a different team in the second half and forced the ball over the line to put them back in the game. Their second goal came from a penalty as the result of the St Dennis keeper knocking a Dobwalls player over after he had gathered the ball from a corner.

Dobwalls were now on top and scored the winner through a good shot from Billy Cotton. Despite a few late efforts on goal Dobwalls held on to secure the win. Thought the referee had a decent game, appears the job gets harder all the time as players dispute every decision, perhaps the use of the sin more often may help.

Wendron Utd 3 (Reeve, Walter, Wood)

Liskeard Ath 2 (Lorenz 2, incl a pen)

As expected a very competitive match at Underlane this afternoon with Wendron moving above their opponents after this win.

Early goals from the hosts had them two up after 18 minutes! In fact it took Wendron something like barely 80 seconds to get off the mark with a forceful run into the Liskeard penalty area by Jacob Cleverly ending up with Ryan Reeve making the most of the ball going to him and notching his first home SWPL goal for the club.

Liskeard responded well, that is apart from their shooting, which was constantly hit way over! While their issue of not getting many, if any, shots on goal, the Dron showed how to make the most of chances as TJ Walter put them two up. The final touch en route to goal did get a Liskeard defender’s touch, but the shot was already goalbound.

Wendron’s lead was reduced five minutes before the break when James Lorenz made the most of a total miss-kick by Ethan Fearn and then, while still down to 10 men with Dan Jennings serving a sin-bin both sides of the half-time break, they were back level after a foul in their first attack after the break. Referee Neil Hunnisett pointed to the penalty spot and Lorenz got his second of the game, although Fearn came very close to saving the striker’s effort.

Back level, I expected Liskeard to finish the business off, but although having more of the next 20 minutes or so, they came up against a stubborn Wendron back-line, even after Fearn had to leave the action injured with Bryan Scoffin taking his place.

With Wendron coming back into the match and going close themselves on a couple of occasions, on 80 minutes we had the goal that proved to be the winner as Josh Wood coolly slotted past the advancing Liskeard ‘keeper Luke Gwillam. Wood had been threatening all match to be honest.

There was still time for a red card when Liskeard’s young Harvey Mullis had to go. By the laws of the game the ref had no option, but I always think it’s harsh when a player is so punished for what in effect I considered could have been a very, very clumsy tackle. But when you’re the last man, I guess you pay the punishment!

So that’s Wendron watched twice in four days by me, both games against hugely tipped title contenders – my verdict, for what it's worth - this league could be more than just a two-horse race!

Doesn't have to be any bad language involved for a player to be sin binned. Dissent is all.

Woke up in a foul mood did you 🤣

The ongoing boasting how your team is better than sides a league above is getting pretty dull now! Back your club, but no need to disrespect others such as Gunnislake!

BUT doesn't it to have to be a deliberate foul to be a red for last man Dave? (I may be wrong)

I don't think genuine attempts to win the ball should be a red

Or don't have enough about them to play at the level you obviously think they should be at

It's over 50 years ago since I passed the ref's exam, but I'm assuming the red was more for the fact that Harvey "denied a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity to an opponent whose overall movement is towards the offender’s goal"

Hopefully one of our referees on here will agree or advise otherwise.

Hi all I would just like to say that whoever Satnav Dave is on this forum is nothing to do with St Dominick FC.I would suggest that instead of disrespecting local clubs and managers that you post under your real name or just not post at all!!

Its hard enough running local clubs without idiots attaching themselves to our club just to disrespect others and take the piss!!

If its a genuine attempt for the ball and outside the box its still a red for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity.

The leniency is only given when inside the penalty box and a penalty  yellow is the resulting sanction. Unless its not a genuine attempt... then still a red.

Not exactly true is it. Moan about decision which is quite clearly wrong. Like any other management team in the league.
