Pre-Season Friendlies

Recommended Posts

Excellent game at Kernick Road between two fully-committed teams and really nowhere near as one-sided as the 0-7 scoreline suggests. Although Mousehole’s dominance of possession and their composure in front of goal ultimately proved the difference between the two sides Penryn created chance after chance and on another day might have had 4 or 5 themselves. Early days, but based on today’s performances both of these teams could do well in their respective divisions this season.

Wrapping this weekend’s PSFs up, Bodmin beat Dropship 7-0 - hopefully not too much of a difficult afternoon for Dropship but I suspect there will be a lot of neutrals cheering on Bodmin this season.

Game ended at 2-3 Chloe Williams hat trick.

Chloe starting the season like she finished the last one then - reckon Liskeard could be the team to beat in the SWRWFL Prem this season 👍

Was a pleasure to be at Clijah for Redruth’s first ever friendly, against Ludgvan. Redruth took an early lead from a penalty with Ludgvan equalising late in the first half. During the second half Ludgvan created most of the chances but were denied time after time by Redruth’s keeper, my Player Of The Match, before Redruth scored what proved to be the winning goal in the 86th minute. A great turnout too - must have been close to 100 watching.

Redruth 2 Ludgvan 1

An excellent turn-out, around 120, for Redruth's first ever friendly.

Credit to both teams, a good match, with plenty of quality on show.

7 of 13 Redruth players were playing in their first ever game, so credit to them all, especially in front of a big crowd.

Thanks to Ludgvan for travelling, especially with no facilities available for the game. Great to see 2 new teams, welcomed by the league.

Oh dear Wendron. Early season problems ?

I wasn’t there so can’t comment on last night’s game but I did see Penryn’s PSF against Mousehole.  Although Mousehole won comfortably in the end I was impressed by Penryn - they created a shed-load of chances which on another day and against a different goalkeeper would probably have led to a shed-load of goals.  Last night may have been a case of “Penryn good” rather than “Wendron bad”.  Would be great to hear from someone who was there.

Torquay United 4-1 Saltash United (Saltash scorer Hayley Ranachan)

Results above.

Another win for St Austell, and good to see Jaz Allen successfully stepping up to this level - only five months since I saw her run out POTM for Bodmin at Priory Park in a CWFL Div 2 game. Just two weeks now to the Women’s National League season start.

Although on the wrong end of the 4-1 score line nevertheless a creditable performance for Saltash against a team from one step up.

Hope the injuries at the Penryn / Foxhole game don’t prove too serious, and hoping too that the Wendron players aren’t too downhearted after two heavy defeats in a week.

Goodness me, how many injuries was that then at Penryn ?

I don’t know the actual number but I understand Penryn started the game with a very light bench so it wouldn’t have taken many injuries to leave them short. With temperatures in the mid 20s and a rock hard pitch, probably a sensible decision to call it a day and go again next time - the season proper’s still the best part of a month away.

One was off with heatstroke!

Good to see some of the regular forum names croppping up on the ladies football threads, long may the current interest in ladies football continue.

It's a welcome breath of fresh air in to the footballing world that no longer represents much of the game played by MEN in the 70s & 80s whose annual wage didn't even match the weekly wage of some of todays premiership players.
Thank you Gary for all your updates, as long as the best players win the games and not the best deceitful cheats, football will benefit.
Cheating is so endemic in the professional game at present, that even commentators on the radio and T.V. programmes have been known to question why a player has not simulated a foul in the penalty area to gain a penalty, with the added comment " he's too honest for his own good, he should have gone down "

As a matter of sporting interest, a recording of the infamous 1970 F.A. Cup final between Chelsea and Leeds was re-refereeed using the rules that were current in 1997 and it was decided that at least 6x RED cards would have been issued at that time, and when a recording of the match was re-refereed again by referee  Michael Oliver using present day rules, he would have issued 11 x RED cards.
The refereee in the 1970 Cup Final was Eric Jennings who issued just ONE YELLOW !!!
Whilst not advocating untamed brutal football, it does expose the world of difference between the modern game and the more physical game of the 70s.

Chelsa's Chopper Harris, Eddie McCreadie, John Hollins and Webb were all capable of some roughing up tatics as were Leeds defender Jack Charlton, Billy Bremner, Norman Hunter and Paul Madely who believed that that was how the game was played and you either accepted it or didn't play the game

It would be easy to look back with rose tinted glasses Older, but when asked to put your boots on and play for a club, the only thought  that came to mind was how to beat the opposition put in front of you.
Fitness and tactics were next in line, and it must be admitted that tactics at times included letting the opposition know that you were there, but never ever can I recall a manager who advocated wasted effort by cheating and trying to deceive the referee.
Eric Jennings was just one of several referees at the time who would have sussed you out pretty quickly.
In the mid 70s fans were the culprits that caused grounds to be fenced off when there was a spate of pitch invasions and a player was more at risk of being injured by a so called fan than he was to be intentionally injured by a fellow player.

Nothing rose tinted about the old way of playing football,  I loved it, better than todays pass to death game and fall over at the drop of a hat.

Remember playing late 70’s through the 80’s as a winger and took some very rough treatment. But in those days you scraped yourself off the ground and never let the defender know you were hurt. Went home with many cuts and bruises. Not condoning it but that was the way it was.

watched league football as well and saw some horrendous violence.

Thanks for posting the info Gary, it looks like a trip to Bude may be in line for tomorrow.

It's good to see the interest that the ladies teams attract on this forum, whether the interest was caused by the Lionesses win or not is of no consequence, what counts is that another aspect of participation in the game is gaining momentum.
A friends tongue in cheek description of the weekends games on offer is, Saturdays is all in wrestling, or on Sundays a bout of ball-room dancing.

Bit of a novelty to see a Liskeard result without Chloe Williams on the scoresheet - will she be back for the start of the season?

Thx TMH - Beth Martin with all four for Penryn. Anyone able to tell us who scored Wendron’s?

I know every manager will say it’s performances not results in pre-season … but Penryn have had a helluva pre-season 💥
