Illogan RBL 3, Gunnislake 1

No cup surprise at  Oxland Park as St Piran League Illogan RBL on the day proved too strong for a Gunnislake side which unfortunately was weakened by a few absentees.

Not sure if it was the usual Illogan squad available but it was good to see skipper Steve Abbott-Smith back in the side and wearing the skipper’s arm band as well.

On a damp miserable afternoon I have to say the pitch played well and didn’t really cut up too much.

Not too much separated the two sides after the first 45 minutes apart from an all important goal midway through the half from Jordan Knuckey.

I have to be honest and say I expected Illogan to ease through the game playing downhill towards the clubhouse in the second half, however Gunnislake got back into this cup tie when almost on the hour James Cawte was allowed to head home to level things.

Inspired by the goal, Gunnislake showed signs of creating a cup upset, until in the 70th minute the evergreen Simon Ellis touched home an Illogan corner at the far post to restore their lead.

The game then became messy with referee Neil Rudkin having to brandish a couple yellow cards before it was wrapped up on the 80th minute with Ashley Smeeth taking advantage of the visitors keeper only able to parry away an Ellis free-kick. The striker, on as a substitute, made no mistake smashing the ball home into the roof of the net.

There was still time for Gunnislake to be awarded a penalty but a Barrie Wyatt save from Joe Wakenshaw’s spot kick confirmed Illogan were on their way to a semi final place in this new Cornwall Intermediate Cup.
