A game of 4 halves!

Saw Terry Burgess watching the game from outside the T hut. Played my first game of footy with Terry for St Levan back in 1982/3. Thereafter, against him when he went to Buryan, still got his elbow marks on the back of my neck to prove it! How time flies.

Nice local derby, reffed exquisitely. Well done both sets of players for an entertaining 10 goal thriller.

Cornwall Junior Cup 2nd Round
Penzance Reserves 6-4 Newlyn Non Athletico
Att - 41

What a game. It had it all! Ten goals, end to end, tension, emotion, a dodgy lino, game changing keeper’s saves, and too boot, a local derby. So different from the previous match.
Penzance hosted local Trelawny Premier side, Newlyn Non Athletico for the last Junior Cup second round tie, the winners will be entertaining Polperro Reserves in the next round. Manager Darren Dayuss had five starting players out but managed to call on the services of first teamer Darryl Richards to help try and keep the League’s top scorer, Jack Liddicoat, at bay, Jack having scored 26 goals in 11 games for Newlyn.
In the first half, Newlyn lead twice during the match only to be pegged back by Penzance. In the second half it was the home side who lead twice before the sides started extra time at 4-4. A goal in each half of extra time sees Penzance eventually overcome Newlyn and book that third round spot.
The game is in it’s sixth minute when Newlyn take the lead. A though ball just down the left sees the keeper clear but a second striker running forward steps in the way of the clearance and knocks it in low, at the near post.
Penzance push forward for an equaliser and miss a couple of chances, are supposedly caught of off side several times. In one attack they actually get the ball in the net but the flag has gone up, disallowed, off side. Another break, the ball whips behind two breaking strikers with the goal standing open.
Eventually after 29 minutes a low free kick is cleared. Sam Payne takes advantage of the space given to score at the far post.
The joy lasts less than a minute as Newlyn go in front again. From the kick off the
ball is knocked through the defence down the 18yd line. The keeper is forced out to close the angle but the striker squeezes the ball between him and the near post.
Penzance are thus forced to press again. A shot into a crowded box makes the Newlyn keeper make a great save as he is back peddling along his line. The balls hits his foot and bounces up and over the bar.
There is time for Newlyn to have a goal also disallowed for offside before the score flips over to 2-2 on 36 minutes. A long Penzance ball on the right sees a defender make a wild clearance which rebounds to Leon Dixon who runs in at the far post to volley in.
H-T
The half starts with both sides pushing forward so it becomes end to end. Both keepers make decent saves.
Then on 60 minutes the hosts go 3-2 up. Dixon gets a second when he scampers through on the left, lobbing the advancing keeper from the edge of the 18yd box.
Like before, it takes Newlyn less than a minute to score. Their right winger runs through from midfield, beats three tackles before slotting the ball home, low, across goal, 3-3.
Back and forth again until the 74th minute and Dixon completes a hat-trick by trapping a high ball in the box, stepping forwards and side-wards to beat a tackle, looks up, sights the net and unleashes a ball the keeper can not get too, 4-3.
Can Penzance hold on for more than a minute this time? Newlyn hit the bar from a corner, Penzance crowd their box but still break in numbers as they know the game is not safe. And so it proves in the 82nd minute. A long ball up the middle, the striker latches on to beat the back line. Keeper has to come out to close the angle. Striker around the stopper and has no problem knocking the ball into the empty net from 10yds.
4-4, who can hold on. Newlyn press, Penzance press. Both boxes crowded. From a point blank Newlyn shot, Penzance keeper Jake Hitchens, unbelievably tips the ball over the bar to keep the home side in it. One of the most important moments of the match.
The referee blows for full time and we are in for an extra 30 minutes.
F-T

The first half of extra time is like a new game. The end to end slows down as the teams both realise they both can score and concede so must change tactics. It’s a bit more cagey. Supporters of both sides are urging their favourites on to score that all important winner. But as we have already seen four times in the game a one goal lead is not enough.
To the delight of the Penzance supporters their team scores after 7mins of the half to lead 5-4. A long ball from the keeper sees Darryl Richards latch onto it.
His speed takes him past the defence, where he runs towards the corner flag before turning and scoring with a cross goal shot.
ET H-T
Newlyn have no choice but to push forward to get back into the game while Penzance start knocking short balls around the park to make their opponents chase the ball and get dragged out of shape.
Newlyn are pushing into the Penzance half 5 mins in when Penzance whack the ball down the left channel. Dixon gets the ball and it is 3 on 1, one sole defender. The defender tackles, wins the ball, Dixon wins it back before shooting in from 12yds. 6-4, four to Dixon.
Newlyn still press but you see some heads have dropped. Even with the two goal lead Penzance don’t time waste, they play the ball up and down the touch-line winning throw after throw.

Time is up, shakes all round, but well done to Newlyn, they never gave up. It could have gone either way.
