Junior Cup (West) (Can't find Junior Cup on the forum)

Illogan Res 2, Constantine 0

Routine giant-killing by Illogan of a team from the league above and to be honest, after their 6th minute lead it is amazing how they weren't 4 or 5 up by half-time; instead of which it took a nail-biting second half scrambled goal on 85 minutes to make the tie safe for them. Football at this level is all about inaccurate passing and shooting and wrong decisions frequently made. Entertaining, though and there were times at 1 - 0 that Constantine looked bound to equalise, but it wasn't to be. Memorable second-half save from their 'keeper of a Calloway header from a  corner. Illogan's 'keeper not really stretched.

The tea hut was open - a must for every ground, I feel. Tea, Coffee, choc all £1.

Nice sitting in the sun watching a game enthusiastically played.

Probus 3 Mullion 3rds 0

Trelawny 3

Another 3 points for us today but it wasn’t the best of performances! Our manager Graham Smith had to referee the game, so that left me with a watching brief from the sidelines. This should have been an away fixture but at Mullion’s request it was reversed and played at Probus. We only had one of last weeks defence starting today.
We didn’t start very well, but we did have a shot from Jamie Bilkey pushed wide after 10 minutes with our first attempt at goal. After 15 minutes we were awarded a penalty, after Jack Truscott was brought down. Luke Gaye scoring from the spot, despite the keeper going the right way. We had another chance when fullback Joe Emmett hooked over from his brother Ben’s corner. After 30 minutes we hit the woodwork twice in quick succession, firstly through an Ethan Gatley shot that rattled the bar and then Joe Emmett hit the post. Jack Truscott had to come off after injuring his ankle in the challenge that led to the penalty and he was replaced by Gordon Douglas. After 40 minutes Mullion had their first attempt on target but the low shot was easily saved by Sam Jones in the home goal. 1-0 at halftime.

We increased our lead 5 minutes into the second half when Ben Emmett  collected the ball In midfield and played in brother Joe with a good pass and he smashed the ball into the roof of the net giving the keeper no chance. After 60 minutes a defensive error gave possession to Mullion and their player blazed over when well placed. A minute later halftime substitute Josh Daniel, played a one two on the halfway line and skipped past a couple of challenges and laid the ball off to Tom Orpe who blazed over. After 75 minutes another excellent Josh Daniel run was well saved. The final goal of the game came a couple of minutes later when a Ben Emmett corner was deflected into his own net by an unlucky Mullion player.

We were pleased to take 3 points and keep a lean sheet, despite not playing well. Mullion were a difficult team to break down but they didn’t threaten too often at the other end. Thanks to our manager Graham Smith for stepping up to referee and he had a good game in the middle, regardless of what a few of the away players thought (they gave him a fair amount of earache). The pitch held up well, despite the heavy overnight rain and that is thanks to the hours of work that Graham does on the pitch each week. Mount Ambrose away for us next week.

30th October 2021

Trelawny Division One

Redruth United Reserves 6-2 Penzance Reserves

Att-28

Penzance were in with a shout for the first half an hour of the game but after that Redruth seemed to get stronger but really changed their back four or five and stood their ground roughly 10-15 yards in front of their penalty area preventing Penzance from getting through.

Even though the home side scored three in the second half they didn’t dominate, just took their few chances to make the final score look better for them than it was.

The game is less than twenty seconds old when Penzance score the opener. They win the ball, boot it towards goal. The keeper mishandles it and it is poked in by a Penzance player following up.

During a Redruth break the Penzance keeper starts forward, loses his footing, but a defender manages to clear off the line. A few seconds later, on 10 minutes,  the Reds are level. They win the ball on their left, knock it forward, crossing it into the box to shoot in low from 10yds.

That was the first of three goals in three minutes. The next scored after twelve to make it 1-2 sees Penzance cross into the box. The keeper steps out but the ball hits him and bobs into the net.

Another minute and the home side are level. Through the middle, a whole gang of Redruth players charge forward forcing the keeper out in a one on four situation. On the edge of his box he brings the attacker down but the ball skips to another striker who has the task of scoring into an empty net. The referee put the whistle to his lips as it was a stone cold penalty but once they scored he gave them the goal.

Redruth get the ball in the net again soon after but the flag has gone up for off-side. Much moaning by the home side, who all look like ex-rugby players (big tall blokes) but the ref stands his ground.

The game settles down to back and forth but no clear chances. As stated the game starts to change after half an hour and every Penzance attack seems to break down on that line about 30yds from the Rederuth goal.

On 38mins Redruth go in front. A corner on their left is weakly knocked over, Penzance try to clear but in the crush of bodies it only reaches a man in red who fires in from 10yds out.

The last few minutes of the half are played in the middle third of the pitch.

H-T

Most of the excitement for the neutral spectator was in that first half and in my notebook are written just the three second half goals scored by Redruth, there being so few chances for either side.

A minute short of the hour and Redruth are leading 4-2. A through ball down the left, a diagonal run into the box until 12yds out allows the striker to fire in cross goal.

Penzance swap keepers as our starter took two or three knocks. I said they were big blokes.

Ten minutes later on 69, another goal goes in, another goal from a corner. This time on the right. Cleared, knocked in again, cleared off the line but too many reds and they force it over from a few yards out.

The final goal comes three minutes later. Penzance lose the ball in the middle. The player takes a few steps towards goal before unleashing the strongest shot of the day which zips in low just out of our stopper’s reach.

F-T

All in all a game to forget. Penzance lacking someone who could take the ball and run at the Redruth defence to beat the 30yd wall and create openings.
