Helston res 2-7 St Day

Helston goals from Fraser Patterson and Rob Symons

First half was controlled by Helston, with St Day catching us on the break 3 times with some good counter attacking football. 2-3 at half time

15 minutes into the second half, we had a player sin binned and St Day made us pay in ruthless fashion, running out comfortable winners

Illogan 3, Mullion 1

Another perfect day for football unless you were the 'keepers with the sun in their eyes at the clubhouse end.

Mullion would have been justified calling the police at half-time as after Illogan took a 4th minute lead it was all Mullion save the occasional break-away. Mullion's 'keeper had little to do after picking the ball out of his own net whilst Mullion created chance after chance. The home 'keeper made some important saves and the rest of the defence was stubborn in the extreme.

Their stubbornness continued in the 2nd half though, playing down the slope, they took the game more to Mullion with some dangerous-looking breaks which all came to nothing, partly due to wildly inaccurate shooting. As the half went on we were wondering how much longer Illogan could hold out until on 75 minutes a long ball led to an Illogan player (No 7?) found himself in a 50-50 challenge with the Mullion 'keeper - which he won, enabling him to score from close range.

Still plenty of time for Mullion to convert their far superior shot on target rate into goals. The home 'keeper made more saves - did I mention his worldie off a header early in the half? Then a pen was awarded to Mullion on 85 for 2 - 1and one sensed a classic last five minutes - except another pen was awarded on 89mins, this time to Illogan. Both pens had appeared tame so that evened out. The pen led to an unlikely 3 - 1 win for Illogan.

Clive Roberts pointed out that Mullion will play worse than today and still win games: how true!

Elliot Green was the last-minute ref, dragged out of retirement, apparently, and credit to him for turning out, much more for his handling of the game.

OAP entry £1.50, cuppas £1 each (one before, 1 at half-time), great view from the centre of the back row in the stand, good banter. A lot of work for the club sec, organising a ref after Covid robbed the game of the originally appointed man.

I totally agree. I thought that Mullion were unlucky to meet the Illogan goalkeeper in such inspired form. Perhaps it was the heavy knock that he took in the first half that stiffened his resolve. All in all a cracking game and a credit to this level of foottball.

Are the Altarnun and Gunnislake results anomalies or would it be fair to say that the ECPL is possibly as strong as the St Pirans league?

In fact when you look at it, you could argue a point that there isn’t much difference between the top sides in the Duchy leagues and the leagues above. The last 4 teams that have gone up from Duchy prem are I believe; St Dominick, SNE, Altarnun and Gunnislake, all of whom have been very competitive since making the step up to ‘Senior’ football!

I would suggest these cup results aren't anomalies. In the last 2 incomplete ECPL seasons St Dom were 2nd and 3rd and now top the St Piran East, which with their firepower doesn't surprise me one bit. Likewise in those two "seasons" Mount Gould were 1st in both, and now they sit 2nd and unbeaten in the South Devon Football League Eastern Division. With the St Piran setup being relatively new still and not having completed any full seasons yet, it will take 2-3 years before it balances out with promotions/relegations and this has been discussed many times before.

Altarnun worked their socks off yesterday and deserved their win. We were 2-0 up with 15 to go, having weathered a storm from the home side, thanks to some good defending and 2 brilliant saves from Mike Rickard. A moment of frustration from our full back and a sin bin saw us reduced to 10 men on 75 mins and Altarnun capitalised with a deserved goal, before a really soft penalty (and booking) saw them draw level on 85. We spurned a chance to win in the last minute before extra time saw us lose our captain to a second soft yellow and with 3 key players off injured Altarnun dominated proceedings from there on in. Good luck to them in the next round.
I hadn’t visited for probably 25 years, and have to say the facilities and surface are excellent these days, but I suspect the pitch dimensions may hold them back from progressing further with current ground grading criteria?
