Foxhole 4 Wendron 1

Saturday 16 th February 2008

For the second time this season Wendron were able only to offer token resistance to Foxhole, whose vast superiority was not reflected in the score, and may easily have hit double figures with more composure. Having the ebullient Griffin available was just what was needed after the Callington debacle, and he proceeded to harass the less than resilient Wendron defence all afternoon.

After an even opening period in which Griffin and the hard working Holland each went close while Bartlett's cross ran tantalisingly along the goal line and Toy's glanced header was saved, Foxhole took the lead on 24 when Bromley, much better than of late, released Griffin to expose a laughably ineffective offside trap. The marine's cool finish was not matched in the glut of chances which soon ensued, until, on 36, Bromley played a short corner to Rickard, whose miscued effort was collected at the far post by the lurking Warne, who fired home off the lunging David Toy.

The home team sealed the points five minutes before the break, when Bromley's cross floated over the stranded Scoffin, and, within seconds, another short corner caught the visitors napping; this time, Holland finished off Rickard's drive. Warne then saw a header chalked off for a push, and Pascoe cleared Griffin's shot off the line as Wendron changed ends thankful it was only four.

Until the final quarter hour, the second half followed a similar pattern of Foxhole domination but they were unable to add to their tally. Griffin's lob dropped just wide, Rickard burst clear only to fire over, Holland headed narrowly past the post before Andrew showed his colleagues how to defend by first robbing Rickard, and then Hill, when it seemed certain each would score. Scoffin's acrobatics continued to frustrate the rampant Foxhole forward line, but little was seen of the visitors as an attacking force, although Bartlett at least showed both willingness and some nice touches, but was almost entirely bereft of support. However, on 75, Hobbs grabbed a consolation, but an unlikely fightback was never a realistic proposition, although Bartlett's left footed drive did strike the bar at the death.
