Kernow off to the Med?

Recommended Posts

Am surprised that nobody has posted about the news that Kernow have “qualified” for the Conifa European championships in June. Two questions (pictures from BBC website): 1) How many players can you name (numbered from the left)?

2 How many of the 12 sides can you identify by country of origin (without cheating via Google/atlas)? I only managed 6/12!

Apparently we also have a women’s team playing in Romania at the end of June in a 6-team “World Cup” but there’s been no announcement on the women’s football front, has there?

The women are against Székelyföld, Çameria, Sápmi, Cascadia & the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, the latter of which was under an unbroken embargo for decades until they played Sápmi in November 2018, with the draw to take place tomorrow at 1300hrs Central European Time:

ConIFA 2021 AGM leaflet, draw times on final page

Extremely worried about Cornish players heading out into a global pandemic in what ConIFA has already admitted are completely uncontrolled circumstances, made especially clear by an interview with one of the senior ConIFA officials last week.

A Szekler media outlet in Romania “spoke to ConIFA Vice-President, Kristóf Wenczel, about the possibilities
Source, in Magyar

"The situation is the same for men and women, as long as it does not involve a serious

financial commitment, we organise the tournaments in such a way that there is no virus,"

began Kristóf Wenczel.

The president of the Szeklerland Football Association added that ConIFA does not have enough financial capacity for the men's European Championships and the women's World Cup to undertake regular testing, like FIFA or UEFA tournaments, and to quarantine teams in case of infections.

Last August, FK Miercurea Ciuc and the Szeklerland Football Association submitted a joint letter of intent to ConIFA for the organisation of the first ConIFA Women's World Football Championship. This was eventually accepted by the organisation, so it is scheduled to be played June 23-30, 2021.

The first ConIFA world event for women will be held in Miercurea Ciuc. In addition to the tournament, there will be six teams in the competition, in addition to Szekelyland, Chameria (Albanians from Greece), Sapmi (Lapland), Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Cascadia (North America) and Kernow have indicated their intention to participate.

The World Cup will be a classic event, after two groups of three, the first two will advance to the semi-finals, followed by the placeholders (for 1st, 3rd and 5th place).

On March 10, we will decide if the tournament can be held or not. Until then, we definitely

need to find out if the female World Cup & the male European Championship can be brought

together in a safe way in the summer. We would not be able to solve the regular testing, as it

has a huge financial and organisational implications, it would be a huge task,” Wenczel said.

The men were supposed to hold the World Cup in northern Macedonia last year, but it was cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The qualifying system has been completely overturned due to the lack of a World Cup in 2020,

the field of entrants in the European Championships in Nice has been unusually selected by design,

so it is easy to imagine that it will change.

At CONIFA, they are committed to holding tournaments behind closed gates,

as it is more important to have an event than to have spectators or not in the stands,"

Wenczel concluded.

Added emphasis in that final quote to show the root of cause for concern, as originally stated.

Worryingly cavalier approach on display, by the appearance of things.

Jersey's manager & Kernow's last opponents in their 10-3 win back in August 2019, the Chagos Islands, are less than amused by the goings on at ConIFA, according to each other's tweets this evening:

All bonkers.

Utterly.

What's truly bonkers is that if Kernow can't go they will potentially be replaced by Il Regno della Due Sicilie, the so-called "Kingdom of the Two Sicilies", an historical state that briefly existed prior to the unification of Italy. They used to play in ConIFA's predecessor, the NFB, when that was falling apart. So this all sounds very familiar.

Basically, a group of people who wish to overthrow the Italian Republic and replace it with Carlo di Borbone, head of the Bourbons.

They're called Neo-Bourbons and apparently that is a thing in 2021.

They even got a new political party, last year.

What exactly have we been gotten into, here?

Totally worth going.

A potential member from west Africa that might be voted into ConIFA tomorrow evening, Biafra (yes, that Biafra from the Biafra Conflict in Nigeria), accidentally leaked why it's so worthwhile to win ConIFA competitions back in December.

Source: Orient Daily, 22 December 2020

The Biafra Football Federation (BFF) has been assured of their membership of FIFA, if it lifts or is among best three in the Confederation of Independent Football Associations (ConIFA), tournament billed for South Africa next year.

Chief Ikenn Egeonu, Biafran Representative in Germany, made the disclosure during a meeting of the sports commission held in Ojukwu Memorial Library, Owerri, in Imo state capital, on Monday. According to him,

"The world football governing body, FIFA, assured the people of Biafra that the BFF

would automatically be registered into FIFA if the country lifted the ConIFA World Cup or at least,

make the list of best three countries of the world outing."

CONIFA Africa president Mr. Christian Lubasi Lusongo Kalaluka said,

"ConIFA is the second largest football governing body in the world and

by extension, acts as a screening body for the admission into FIFA"

So if Kernow win the 2021 Euros in Nissa, presumably we get to enter UEFA?

What have we been gotten into, here?

My oh my, Mr. (or Ms.) Omsevyas I’ve never come across a conIFA anorak before and am most impressed by the depth of your knowledge (although, of course, it could be total unmitigated rubbish and neither I or anybody else on here would have the ability to contradict you!). I suspect that, unlike me, you got 100% in the questions at the start of the thread!
