Matt Pengelly stands down at Polperro

Recommended Posts

Polperro AFC can officially confirm that Matthew Pengelly has sadly decided to step down in his role as the first team manager. Matthew aka ‘Gelly’ is a legend of the club and is stepping away from the managerial position, he will still be an integral part of the football club and maintain his role as the club secretary. Gelly has been the first team manager for 10 years after managing the clubs reserve team as well as playing for the club for many years. He has been responsible for many successful seasons, including winning the ECPL league cup and supplementary cup as well as clinching the ECPL division 1 title in 2013. Matt will be remembered as the most successful manager in the clubs history after repeatedly competing and beating teams from higher divisions.

He has an incredible reputation in the Cornish game and has rebuilt numerous teams that are known for their hard work and attacking flare, while mirroring his belief in the importance of sportsmanship and positive values. Mr Polperro will be missed in the dug outs at commitment, success and hard work will be organised at a future date when able. Yours sincerely Polperro AFC chairman

What a fantastic career.  It shows what can be done at a club who punch well above their weight.  Matt has been a great help to me producing honest and reliable match reports.  A true footballing gentleman who gets his team playing the right way. Thank goodness he is staying with the club as secretary.  Nothing like a little continuity.  Good wishes Matt.

Matt Pengelly, a legend at Polperro and one of the most respected guys in local football. A pleasure knowing you Matt, caught up with you a couple of years ago after a long while. Polperro, down the years, have seen some real characters and you have been right up there with the best, secretary skills first class also, enjoy your managerial retirement.

Matt most have joined Polperro in the late 1990s, i was the club secretary at the time and probably still turning out occasionally. He was always a reliable player and clubman, loved the craic as well as the football and an all round good bloke. He has been a huge part of the club for many years and hopefully will remain so but without the pressures of management. Good on you, Matt.
