Surprise, surprise, this is game on!

Stopped raining 11.30 last night, nice bit of wind and sunshine combined with a few hours on a fork and we're playing...Yo!

The strong wind that helped the game to be on in the first place was blowing down the pitch at Kernick Road into the bottom left corner along with the excellent work from groundsman and Penryn legend Bakes of course.  Aggie set up well at the back and there was no hint at what was to come in the opening 25 minutes. My old mate Kimmo always sets his teams up well regardless of what players he’s got to work with and he had a good few out today including another old mate and legend Danny OHagan up front with a sickness bug. Although Penryn forced 8 corners in the first 25 minutes which they dominated Aggie looked to be coping okay until they got hit with a 4 goal blast in the space of 9 minutes which killed the game and the spirit of the visitors. A 4th minute Harry Roberts corner was caught full on the volley by skipper Russell May but Aggie keeper Ash Smith did well to parry around the post. On 7 minutes a cross field pass by Jake Shaw was volleyed just over the bar by Josh Sims from the angle of the penalty box. After a spell of 5 corners in 4 minutes Shaw saw his 11th minute overhead hook headed out from under the bar and a minute later Jack Rapsey got down the right wing and drilled in a cross which Smith did well to save with his feet just before Bradley Leivers could pounce. 5 minutes later the dangerous Reggie May sent over a cross from the right that evaded everyone and crept inches past the far post. Just as it looked like the visitors were coming into the game with a couple of forays forward and a few offside calls, Penryn took the lead when a short corner from Roberts saw Sims whip in a powerful cross which was parried by Smith but the alert Leivers was on hand to drill home from ten yards. Sims ball inside to Rapsey saw him turn and hit a powerful drive the wrong side of the post on the half hour mark before two minutes later the hosts doubled the lead when Rapsey got down the left and curled a majestic left footed cross around the back of the defence to the far post where Reggie May sent a great header back across Smith and into the far corner. Within 2 minutes he doubled his tally when Shaw raced down the right and squared a ball across goal for May to side foot home at the far post despite the best efforts of Smith. Ten minutes before the break Ryan Reeve turned sharply in the box to slot the ball into the far corner to complete a four goal haul in just 9 minutes. Two minutes later saw Roberts thread a superb ball through to the speedy Reeve but just as he shot the ball hit a bobble and it ballooned over the bar. On 42 minutes Aggie did manage their first shot on target but it was straight at home keeper Dan Lord from 25 yards. There was just time for Sims to flash a shot past the post before the referees half time whistle. 6 minutes into the 2nd half Penryn captain Russell May picked up a yellow card for a foul on Aggie veteran Dan OToole who still covers every blade of grass every game. Probably the right call by referee Mr Rickard who had an excellent no fuss game in the middle, let the players play. Shrewd Penryn manager Harry Pope made a treble substitution on 53 minutes giving a few players a break on the heavy pitch and after a lull in play those fresh players were  instrumental in another 5 goal 25 minute burst. Just before the hour mark Reeve squared across goal from the left for Reggie to complete his hat-trick tapping in from 5 yards at the far post. On 65 minutes Lewis Pellow got down the left and pulled the ball back from the byline to Rapsey who’s last act of his afternoon saw him side step a defender before lashing a left foot strike into the roof of the net from 12 yards. 3 minutes later a one/two between Pellow and Reeve saw the latter have his point blank effort well saved by the busy Smith. After 71 minutes Leivers pounced on a mistake in defence to race clear but Smith again saved brilliantly with the rebound falling back at Leivers feet and he squared to Reeve who crashed a shot off the crossbar. On 77 minutes a spot of pinball in the area saw the ball land at Leivers feet and he uncharacteristically smashed over from 8 yards but he soon made amends 2 minutes later when Sims whipped another beautiful corner in to the near post and Leivers produced a deft flick to score. Two minutes later the ball was pinging around the six yard box and ended up with Pellow hitting the post from 3 yards as it came to him quickly off a Smith save. A minute later another Sims pinpoint corner saw the ball balloon up in the air before dropping to Roberts who prodded the ball home from 2 yards and he got on the scoresheet again 2 minutes later when a deep cross to the far post from Tom Annear saw Shaw head back across goal for Roberts to side foot home from 4 yards. 3 minutes from time a free kick on the right saw a Aggie header on target but Lord plucked the ball from under his crossbar. There was just enough time for a Sims volley to be deflected wide and get the Penryn corner count up to 23 for the game. A ruthless performance from Penryn who could have scored 15 on the day as they ripped open the Aggie defence but Aggie deserve credit for never giving up the ghost and I was glad it didn’t go to double figures for their effort. Me and Aggie linesman Rhyd Purnell were  counting down the minutes and was glad when the ref blew up. Thought Aggie skipper Charlie Kemp was superb always trying to prompt his team mates along with some great blocks and last ditch tackles at centre back, Smith made some outstanding saves in goal which even his manager would have been proud of and he was some keeper I can tell you! Spent many days up front at Newquay looking back down the pitch shaking my head in disbelief watching Kimmo keep us in games over the years. An entertaining afternoons cornish football, next stop Bristol City v Birmingham Friday night and Swansea v Derby County on Saturday. Bet I don’t see as many goals in those two games!! 🤔👍⚽️

Perranporth 2 v 4 Hayle 

Hayle were dominant in this game apart from first 15 mins and the final 10 mins when Perranporth were chasing the game without much joy. Decent game on a bumpy pitch with a fair wind from corner to corner. Hayle capable of beating anyone at this standard with the players they have, as I have mentioned on a different topic it's their consistency! Perranporth can play better and will, probably competing for 2nd now.
