HAMWORTHY V PARKWAY - MATCH REPORT

COPP 4 TIMER SEES PARKWAY THROUGH TO THE LAST 32 OF THE FA VASE

Parkway travelled to Wessex League Hamworthy United in the 3rd round of the FA Vase, their 3rd consecutive away tie in the competition. Three enforced changes were made from their last outing at Wellington with the influential midfield duo of Shane Krac and Mikey Williams only able to be named as substitutes and Aaron Bentley returning in defence.

 

Parkway quickly adapted to the artificial surface with Teigan Rosenquest going close almost straight from the kick off. Playing at a high tempo Parkway took the lead on 5 minutes. A neat exchange between Jack Calver and Rosenquest saw the ball switched to Jordan Copp wide on the left who drilled his first time angled shot low into the far corner from around 18 yards. Parkway continued to set the pace with Calver, Billy Palfrey and Jamie Lowry controlling the midfield with their fluent passing and movement. They almost doubled their lead on 13 minutes with Calver seeing his shot deflected for a corner after being set up by Palfrey.

 

Hamworthy offered little threat at this stage although the pacey Ollie Davis on the right flank looked their most likely outlet. Parkway continued to press and on 24 minutes good link up play between Adam Carter and Copp set up Calver whose shot from his weaker foot flew well wide. On 28 minutes more smart play between Copp and Carter saw the latter go clear only for his angled shot to clip the far post and away to safety.

 

The host’s Lee Francis was the first player to be booked as Hamworthy fought hard to get back into the game. On the half hour a long ball and a high bounce almost caught the Parkway defence out with Ash Pope going clear and firing into the side netting from a tight angle. With Hamworthy now enjoying their best spell of the game, they equalised in controversial circumstances on 32 minutes. With Parkway claiming the ball had gone out of play on the left and continuing to contest the decision, the ball was swept wide to the right where the unmarked and dangerous Davis, showing good technique, raced forward and drove a low right foot shot across the exposed Kyle Moore in the Parkway goal. The remainder of the half was a tight affair with play being confined to the congested midfield area with few further chances being created.

Although Parkway started the brighter and should have made their pressure pay by creating more chances, the hosts came more into the game as the half progressed with the 1-1 scoreline just about reflecting the balance of play.

 

Hamworthy made a sharp start to the second half forcing Parkway on to the defensive with Fawzi Saadi going close on 49 minutes. On 51 minutes Saadi then became the second player to be booked before a decisive period of play took the game away from Hamworthy. On 55 minutes a flowing move through midfield with Calver at the heart saw him link well with Carter who released Copp now playing wide on the right. Copp cut inside and beat keeper Ollie King at his near post with a low drive from around 15 yards. Two minutes later Parkway went further ahead with Copp completing his hattrick with the best goal of his three. Yet another precision diagonal ball from Calver found Copp who again cut inside his marker and fired a rising angled drive from around 20 yards high into the top corner giving King no chance. Top Bins I think they call it these days!

 

Just after the hour Brandon Randall replaced Lee Francis for the hosts with Craig Duff replacing the hard working Carter up front for Parkway. On 65 minutes a period of Parkway pressure, with Ryan Lane prominent down the left, saw them force a couple of corners with a smart save by King from a powerful header from defender Rob Farkins denying him his first goal of the season. A rare breakaway by the hosts on 69 minutes created hesitation between Moore and Farkins allowing Pope to get to the bye line with his shot finding the side netting when he probably should have done better. Hamworthy continued to press forcing a couple of corners which were well defended with Moore dealing comfortably with a couple of crosses and close range efforts. Cam Munn replaced Jamie Filkins for the hosts on 73 minutes with Parkway now content to retain possession and look to manage the game out. Lane shot just wide on 78 minutes after a patient build up through midfield with Calver, Palfrey and Lowry continuing to impress with their work rate, vision and range of passing.

 

On 83 minutes Parkway turned defence quickly into attack after a brave block by Farkins in the 6 yard box saw the ball break forward through midfield to Rosenquest who twisted and turned with his stinging shot being palmed away by King with Copp reacting the quickest to slot home the loose ball from close range for his fourth and simplest goal. Parkway then comfortably saw the game out without utilising any further substitutions.

 

A solid all round performance from Parkway, especially in the second half with a well organised defensive unit coupled with an impressive, creative midfield providing a firm foundation for the victory which with more quality in the final third could well have been more convincing. The win sees Parkway into the 4th round and last 32 of the competition which equals their previous best ever achieved in the 2009/10 season when they were despatched 6-0 by Chertsey Town.

 

Monday’s draw is eagerly awaited as it now moves from regional to national and after 3 away ties on the spin who knows where it will take Parkway. The games continue to come thick and fast with a visit to Exmouth Town in the Les Phillips League Cup on Wednesday followed by the visit of Bridport in the league next Saturday for Bolitho Park’s first game since 16 November. As a footnote, your correspondent was delighted to arrange a meet up with a former Navy colleague who lives locally and who he’d not seen for the best part of 30 years. The perfect afternoon.

I was at this game and saw Parkway give a very good second half performance, especially of course from Copp. It could have been very different had their captain been sent off for what looked to me like a stamp on a Hamworthy player when I believe it was 1-1 or 1-2, instead it was the home player who got a card, a yellow one.

Also quite impressed with the Parkway travelling support, and good luck on their long journey in the last 32.
