PARKWAY HALT THE BADGERS IN THE FA VASE

Despite appalling weather and hazardous travel conditions, Parkway made the 143 mile trip to the New Forest to take on Wessex Premier league side Brockenhurst. With the match in considerable doubt and a constant dialogue between respective club officials, Parkway eventually set off at 1040 with the game being finally declared on at around midday with Parkway en route and in the Honiton area. Eventually arriving at 2.45, kick off was sensibly delayed until 3.45. After 3 successive postponements since their last game on 19 October, Parkway made one change with Jack Calver returning in midfield in place of the unavailable Jamie Lowry.

 

Despite their disrupted preparations, Parkway made a lightening start with Shane Krac seeing an effort well saved and Mikey Williams, Jordan Copp and Ryan Lane making early inroads along the flanks. A Parkway corner on 5 minutes resulted in a trademark far post header from Rob Farkins smashing against a post and being cleared away to safety. With the impressive Lane and Copp linking well along the left, a neat interchange between Lane and Krac on 10 minutes set up Williams whose powerful effort was blocked by home keeper Jon Webb. Parkway continued to dominate playing some incisive football through the midfield creating chance after chance forcing Brockenhurst to defend in depth and in numbers. On 17 minutes another Williams shot was somehow blocked by Webb after another penetrating run by the outstanding Lane whose pace and trickery was proving a constant threat. Another corner on 18 minutes saw another Farkins header well saved as Parkway continued in the ascendancy with Krac and the busy Calver and the neat and tidy Billy Palfrey controlling the midfield.

 

A rare Brockenhurst counter attack on 22 minutes saw Rafa Ramos go clear only to be denied by a perfectly timed tackle in the penalty area by Nick Milton with Kyle Moore clearing the danger. A Parkway break on 25 minutes saw Carter and Williams link cleverly with Williams seeing his stinging shot superbly saved at the near post by the increasingly busy Webb. Parkway finally broke the deadlock on 26 minutes. A short corner on the left to the quick thinking Copp saw him create space and fire home from an acute angle from around 15 yards. The effervescent Lane continued to cause problems along the left linking well with Copp who saw another shot smothered by Webb as Parkway pushed for a second goal. However it was Brockenhurst who almost equalised on 33 minutes. A quick counter along the left saw a mishit Leon Carbayo-Borges shot almost wrong foot Moore who did well to recover and alter direction to make a fine stop with his feet. Brockenhurst continued to compete well with Tom Hill looking lively in midfield but were unable to create many clear cut chances. Further Parkway pressure and a series of corners saw a Farkins shot superbly pushed over by Webb on 39 minutes before Parkway doubled their lead on shortly after. A fine cross field ball found Milton clear on the left. The central defender, who had stayed forward after another Parkway free kick, showed good control, skill and awareness to square the ball into the danger area where Adam Carter, showing a strikers instinct, prodded home from close range.

Brockenhurst then saw Dylan Manufor and Mitchell Speechley-Price yellow carded in quick succession before the final action of the half saw Webb drop a corner under no pressure only for Krac to scoop the loose ball over the bar from close range. An impressive half from Parkway with only some inspired goalkeeping from Webb denying them further goals from the numerous chances created.

 

The hosts made a change at half time with Ben Kemplen replacing Will Tickle. Brockenhurst made the sharper start with Cassius Newton seeing his long range shot comfortably saved by Moore as Parkway were unable to pick up the pace of their first half display. Carter picked up a yellow card on 51 minutes as Brockenhurst enjoyed a rare period of possession adopting a more direct approach generally bypassing their midfield. A deep cross from the left was well defended by Parkway as the hosts continued to compete well and look more threatening than in the first half. However Parkway generally remained in control and on 61 minutes a whipped in free kick from 25 yards by Krac was acrobatically tipped over by Webb. Brockenhurst replaced Carbayo-Borges with James Shorey on 65 minutes with Speechley-Price showing good skill and firing in a low drive on 67 minutes which was superbly pushed around the post by Moore. Parkway then rung their own changes with Teigan Rosenquest replacing the lively Copp on 69 minutes and Craig Duff on for the hard working Carter on 74. Rosenquest made an almost immediate impact and increased Parkway’s lead on 75 minutes. With virtually his first touch of the ball he drove in from the left and showing good close control beat a couple of defenders before firing in a low shot from around 15 yards beating Webb at his near post. Parkway made their final change on 77 minutes with Elliot Ward replacing Calver in midfield. With Parkway now content to manage the game out, Brockenhurst continued to have their fair share of possession forcing Moore to tip another long range effort over the bar on 79 minutes. Parkway finished the game strongly with Krac shooting just over on 85 minutes and Ward also just missing the target on 87 after a neat interchange with Williams.

 

A polished, well organised performance from Parkway with a particularly impressive first half display against a young Brockenhurst side who never gave up and showed glimpses of their capabilities with a decent second half display which was more even than the first. The game was played in a good spirit and apart from a small area in the clubhouse corner, the pitch held up remarkably well and enormous credit must go the home groundstaff and army of volunteers who had obviously worked tirelessly in appalling conditions to do all they could to get the game on and save the visitors a wasted journey. Parkway now go into the hat for the 3rd round draw on Monday and after two successive away trips to Hampshire will be hoping for a home tie. Should they reach the 4th round, this would equal the clubs furthest progress in the competition which was achieved in the 2009/10 season. Parkway return to league action on Saturday when lowly Chipping Sodbury are the visitors to Stadio Bolitho. Chipping Sodbury were Parkway’s bogey side last season, winning 3-2 at Bolitho and drawing 3-3 at home in the last game of the season meaning they were the only side Parkway did not beat in their league campaign.

Brockenhurst - beautiful part of the country too. Used to drive through it every day, en route to work at Fawley Oil Refinery back in the early 60's. 

Indeed it is Keith, I'm from that neck of the woods and spent many a summers day running around the forest as a child...I even ended up marrying a girl from the forest too
