MESSAGE FROM THE CORNWALL FA (received Friday 25 Oct)

This is a message for those of you who are due to play your Round 2 fixture in the Cornwall Junior Cup tomorrow.

The weather forecast for today and all of tomorrow is for heavy rain and strong winds, therefore we will allow all home clubs to postpone their matches without the need of a match official to inspect the pitch, but please note the following:

Postponements may be made by the home club today or before 10am on Saturday morning. If the pitch is still deemed playable by the home club at 10am, but could deteriorate further, then the home club must arrange for the appointed match official or a local qualified referee to inspect the pitch at 12 noon.

Once a decision has been made (match off, pitch inspection or definitely on), the home club MUST inform their opponents, the appointed match referee and Paul Murphy, preferably by email paul.murphy@cornwallfa.com<mailto:paul.murphy@cornwallfa.com>, or by phone 07789 533586. Likewise, once a final decision is reached based on a pitch inspection at 12 noon, then the above parties must be notified.

If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact me claire.summers-evans@cornwallfa.com<mailto:claire.summers-evans@cornwallfa.com>

Commonsense surely. Ccfa let's wait until 12 o clock to get a referee in to cancel the game. Some teams are already meeting up to travel.

If it’s going to be off at 12 it will be off at 10! Forecast is to stop around 10 so those pitches which maybe ok at 10 makes sense to inspect again later. But communication between club secretaries tonight to ensure an inspection carried out prior to leaving is best.

Great win for us against higher league opposition 💛🖤

Thank you for agreeing to reverse the fixture and credit to your ground staff getting the pitch playable after the rain we had!

Good luck in the next round!

Total joke.

Problem with these pitches is they do wear out, so the venue needs to recoup the cost of replacing the carpet roughly every 10 years depending on usage.

They also require high maintenance with labour and expensive machinery involved.  They are certainly not maintenance free, brushing, combing, weed and algae treatments are all part of keeping them up to scratch.

And. If you play league football on them they are subject to a ball bounce test, fail that and no league football can be played on them.

The Penryn college 3G is being renewed next summer,  its worn out after 10 years, and looks terrible.

Some good points in that comment above, but ultimately, Cornish football is suffering. Even if a game goes ahead on a surface that may be dry on the day, you're playing on a pond and the pitches cannot cope. Can't fault some of the groundsman they do bang up jobs, but for clubs in Duchy 1-4, they havn't the facilities to maintain pitches that are torn to shreds by high wind  and heavy rain.

This would be massively unpopular i know, but given the worst of British weather comes between October and February, you can't help but think a 'Russian League' style calendar could potentially work, where a season would run from March to November; unpopular in the summer holiday period I'm fully aware, but surely we would see less cancellations?

Roache Raider you need volunteers to look after your pitch, even if you just try to fork away the water during the week, but as usual it’s down to people giving up their time. I know we have had lots of rain recently as well. You can improve your pitch if you plan now for next summer and fundraise it’s not easy but if your group want it enough it’s doable.
